Spider Web Construction Luck

This never came to mind: how in the world does a spider get his or her web about one meter away? The whole web's construction starts with the first thread, a horizontal thread on which the rest of the web is constructed. The first thread is the most difficult part of the web's construction; it requires more luck than skill.
The spider cannot fly, so how does it connect the first line between the two points? I always thought that the first knot was connected, and then the spider unrolled and walked all the way to some other side to tie the second knot. Well, it's not like that. The construction is less exhausting than that; it requires wind.
