Blue Heron in Action

Right place, right time. It happened to be lunchtime for the Great Blue Heron [Ardea herodias] at McKenzie Marsh, Aurora, Ontario.

The weather was not working in my favour—not enough light; however, I was still able to shoot some action photos suitable for web display. The other day, I watched a Caspian Tern fish, and every time he dived for the fish, he got it. The Great Blue Heron has a different technique; he stands very still and then slowly extends his neck to dive for the fish. Watching him today, unfortunately, one out of three dives was successful. I guess the 'fish catch' precision was a little off; maybe he is having a bad day. Anyway, while the heron was going for the fourth dive, it started to rain pretty badly, so we had to take off as well.

Oh, and before I forget, the Great Blue Heron makes a series of squawks and low croaks; when I first heard the heron, I thought it was a frog.
