Wow - Downey Woodpecker Visit

This time I did not have to chase the woodpecker in the forest. Last time I did. I chased them in the forest, perhaps because all my life I have been deprived of woodpeckers. I always saw them in books and magazines. I was lucky to get the Pileated Woodpecker once this summer, but that was a crazy run.

So today, I was on the phone, and I heard this unusual song outside. There he was, the Downey Woodpecker, eating off my bird feeder. I have not done much birding lately. I have just been busy with work and events during the weekends, and sometimes it was a little too cold.
Well, they are all now coming to me.

Wow.. your woodpecker photo is real nice. You are so lucky for this photo.
How fortunate to have this lovely fellow at your feeder and THEN to be able to photograph him so beautifully! Cindy at Rosehaven Cottage

Oh that reminded me of
a time about 30 years
ago when I was living
in a house with a wood
exterior, in Virginia.

A woodpecker discovered
my house and decided it
was the perfect place to
practice its wood pecking.
That darn bird woke me
up many a morning, busily
pecking away at the house!

I have done my share of chasing after birds and animals in the woods too, so I know how pleased you must be to have them coming to you! I hope he tells his buddies!
You're so funny, Anna. I can see you hightailing it through the bush catching that woodpecker photo. :D This year I had one pecking on a metal sign and thought the woodpecker had gone stereo. It was soooo loud.

Jeff says the tail has little spikes on the end of his tail feathers to help it climb trees.

Hugs, JJ
LOL The woodpecker has little spikes on the end of his tail. Can you tell I just arrived home from a long trip. :D We visited Pictured Rocks.

This is the second time this weekend I have seen a woodpecker of this colour, your picture here and one in my garden here in the UK.
I couldn't say if it was the same sort but it was black and white, I am only used to seeing the green ones with red crests here.

Thanks Kriz cpec. I was lucky to get this, after about 25 shots.

Digitalshuttermania, thanks for your comment. I think my luck is getting better, like I said before, I had to chace them, now they come to me, lol.

Cindy, nice to have you back, and thanks for your comments. I been hearing that many people I know have woodpeckers in their backyard, so finally I got one too. Hope he will be back.

Jaya, this is very funny story. May be he was shaping your house, just trying what is the bigger damage from woodpecker or bugs, lol. I get sometimes other birds knocking on my window too, its fun at the beginning, but then I just want to sleep, lol.

Bob, now I know what your favs are, moons, woodpeckers, cool.

Kathy, we have so much in common. Soon or later I will have to give up the chases, I think I have to let youner ones do that part, lol.

JJ, yeah the running is fun, but I ensure that not many see me, other wise they probably think I am real nut. Thanks for telling me about the spikes, I will go back and check it out, did not noticed at all. Thanks again.

Peter, these woodpeckers are very common here. When we go hiking we see them all the time. I would love to see the green one you have, never seen green bird excep parrots.

Thanks all for your comments, it is always appreciated.

Anna :)

We get these on the trees in front of our living room window here in Southern Oregon. Real fun to watch them go up and down, around and round.

Last week when on an overnight backpacking trip, we saw a Pileated Woodpecker, North America's largest woodpecker. (Unless the rumors coming out of the bayous in the south are to be believed!)

Hi Will, that must be nice. Hopefully with my food supply they will be coming. Its nice to have real life in your backyard.
BTW, I have photo of the Pileated Woodpecker, this the one I chased around the forest, just waiting for the right time to post. My first encounter wasn't so good, just got photo from far far away, the second encounter much better - it will be coming soon. Anna :) PS Will you seem to know a lot about brids, are you into birdding too?
I also have a woodpecker that drinks out of my hummingbird feeder. I guess if he didn't like it or it was bad for it he wouldn't drink it.It's not very often he does this, but he does.
