Bald Eagles [Haliaeetus leucocephalus] were always and always my favourite birds. This was way before I had my hands on the camera. I never really saw them in real life until a few years ago. They are such beautiful and glorious birds. Unfortunately, most of my photos are taken at various zoos (Toronto Zoo, African Lion Safari, Jurong Bird Park, San Diego Zoo, Hanover Zoo) and usually through the wire mesh in the cages.
I am lucky that my current 100-400mm Canon lens does not pick up anything close. I just remembered that there was another place I saw Bald Eagles. It was when we visited the Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia. However, due to the bad weather and them being far away, I only got a quick glimpse of a few pairs of eagles. I guess I now have a good reason to go back.
As my blog post title states, the Bald Eagles have not been on the threatened species list since June 28, 2007. However, once very common in the United States, the bald eagle population declined from approximately 1/2 million birds in the early 1700s to about 500 pairs in the 1960s in the 48 contiguous states of the US. The population decline was caused by humans, by activities such as mass shootings, the use of dangerous pesticides on crops, the general destruction of habitat, and the contamination of waterways and food sources by different pollutants. However, mainly, the decline was caused by the use of DDT pesticide on crops, which caused the thinning of the eagle's egg shells and their breaking during the incubation process. The recovery took many years, and after going from 500 pairs to more than 10,000 nesting pairs in 2007, eagles were upgraded from endangered status to threatened status. On June 28, 2007, eagles were finally removed from the threatened list in 48 US states.

We have seen bald eagles a few times in Maine, one swooping down over the lake to catch a fish, and another time circling over a not-too-traveled road in a mostly wooded area.
Thanks for the interesting and encouraging post!
Your information about the eagle is very interesting too. I didn't know that endangered stuff.
Cheers,
David
Excuse my ignorance but I never knew, until now with your help, that half of the world's 70,000 Bald Eagles lived in Alaska.
Well, I learn something new everyday!
Regards
Peter
i travel a lot for my photography and there are places where i see lots of eagles.
I live in the great Northwest and i climb a lot.
I have the eagles and big ravens watching us climb the mountains which are their territory.
I love your bald eagle pic, and enjoyed learning the info about them on your post.
Thanks for checking out my blog again....I am glad I am getting a few readers, as silly as my blog is!

Beautiful Bald Eagle (if he is not endangered not threatened...it must be LS LOL LOL)!
Seriously now, it is a marvellous bird: I am impressed! Well, I always loved Eagles, cause I see them as the symbol of Emperors :)!
Yes, humans are cruel to the environment; and they are ruining the eco-system *nodding*!
Have a blessed weekend!
Another bird that has made a great comeback around here is the Osprey. Sometimes when out on a lake in the canoe, one will dive down for a fish just a few feet away from the canoe. It can startle you because they hit the water so hard!

Your post is very interesting. I learn a lot from your blog not only the nice photos but also the interesting stories. Honestly, I never seem them in the real life. They are in zoos.
I think some people like to catch them but they don't know the effect on the food chain and that will result in extinction of species : (
Thanks very much for your post to remind us about this.
Anyways, I love this photo taken with the EF 100-400 mm f/4.5-5.5L USM which is one of my dream. I hope I could buy it in the future.
Cheers

Yes you are right we learn something new every day, and by reading just extra. You know that the Bald Eagle is national symbol of US, but once Benjamin Franklin wanted Wild Turkey to be the national symbol of US from letters to his daughter
Learning is good....again thanks for your comments and good questions. Anna :)
Glad that your blog is growing, and there is no such a thing as silly blog. I find blogging is written from the heart, and by real people, and I enjoy reading every bit of it - I guess I have done too much of technical stuff in my life, lol.
BTW you made the list of Blogs I Visit on my Blog (left column).
Anna :)
Thanks for your kind comment. Anna :)
Yes they are such a beautiful birds, ang gracious. I wish we had them around, so I don't have to travel far, oh well. It is sad how harmful we can be. Once we been hiking and we were stopped by man walking his dog, and he was admiring nature so much, that at some point started to be angry and complain that we humans are such a parasites, I am not sure if I wanted to hear that, but sometimes it makes sense. We tend to invade everything, you should see how much of commercial and residential development is going on in our area, we just keep nodding our heads everytime we drive by, and say 10 years ago this was beautiful field once.
Thanks for your comment again, and if I don't see you around, you have yourself a good weekend - still laughing about LS, lol.
Anna :)
Osprey are nice birds too, and I was lucky to have my 100-400mm lens ready to catch this as he was catching the fish, because all this was happening on the other side of the pond. Thanks again for your comments, and bits and pieces of knowledge. BTW I noticed you are using html link, cool it gets me to your blog fine. Anna :)
I was just flipping through pages in the bird book and they had few pages of sketches of some other birds that they don't exist anymore, and the scary part is that they don't exists anymore because due to hunting, for food or for clothing decor (the feathers). Yes it is sad. However, we seem to recognize that, so hopefully all will be fine. Mind you not all birds are identified yet, and probably new species get born, just like a dinosaur age. Its all part of life and evolution.
About the lens, as I said before, once you get larger lens, it is never enough and looks like I am ready for another one. But then I was saving money for few years to get my recent equipment, so it will be probably another few years for another upgrade. Sometimes waiting is good.
Thanks again, Anna :)
And have a nice weekend.I will be heading for the mountains hopefully i will get some good pictures.
Great photo, they always look so intense to me.

Thanks for such a detailed history and education regarding balded eagle

Excellently captured.
It is great news to hear that they are off the endangered list - your post was most informative!
There are a couple of electric companies that set up web cams in various bird's nests that I usually love to watch in the spring. They have eagles, hawks, owls, and osprey. They turn them on when the birds arrive, and you see them raise their young - they are amazing. I will try to remember in the spring to forward the websites to you. You will love watching them!
This is a wonderful photo of this very elegant bird. Thanks also for the very informative post.
Bobbie
I have been on the fringes for a while as sitting in front of the computer has been very uncofortable, but I am back.
I have been catching up on your posts since I was last around and must say that I have enjoyed your posts.
The Bald Eagle reminds me of our Fish Eagle - such beautiful birds.
I have also posted the long promised pictures of the Kudu bul for you. http://themaxefiles.blogspot.com/2007/12/several-weeks-ago-anna-from-canada.html
Thanks again for all your support and kind words

LOL That was my goal: to make you laugh LOL :). Oh, when LS reads this we will have a tête-a-tête for sure LOL LOL *nodding*.
Oh, yeah; we are parasites indeed. Humans have no respect for what God gave them, it's appalling *nodding*!
Nature is such a gift: it's filled with gorgeous animals; amazing landscape; revigorating air to breathe...:).
Eagles may be far but at least you have an excuse to travel, right? ;)
I had a relaxing weekend, I hope your was as great as mine :)!
lol lol It was my first joke about LS, and I am glad you liked it lol!!! (I bet he'll like it too lol) :).
Cheers

We have bald eagles in our area now and when I see a large shadowed wing span fly over the house, I run outside to make sure my cats are all right.
Hugs, JJ
P.S. thanks for the link I going to make one up for you tonight :D
Love the way you said it: 'Nature is such a gift: it's filled with gorgeous animals; amazing landscape; revigorating air to breathe...:).' - it is so true.
I tell you I am really going to be heavy santa this year, we got all these family events (bdays) in December, and visits to some relatives, especially this past two weeks, I say oh well, but then the Ukrainian Christmas is two weeks later, where now this is all Italian side, lol.
So the weekend is almost over, got to make some high fiber lunches for tomorrow's work, lol. Thanks for your comments, and I see you next week, Anna :)
I guess you are right, these are hunting birds, so yes please watch out for your cats. I forgot that they are predators too. Thanks for your comments JJ as always it is appreciated. Anna :)
I was inspired lol :).
I know what you mean: this month is full of Bdays for me too *nodding*. In January I'll have to lose weight, I just know it lol lol *nodding*.
High fiber lunches, ey? Sounds yummy :)!
See you next week, dear :)!
Cheers
And you too, then I don't feel so bad gaining some weight, lol.
I don't know if you can call high fiber lunches yammy, especially for my husband - I just fed him with 1/2 cup of buckwheat (kasha), cabbage salad with red onions and carrots aged for one week, and rainbow trout. Well, he never really complains, so I don't know if he likes it or not, for me it doesn't really matter - it wasn't the greatest combination, but as long it is beneficial I eat it.
I just looking at the total of comments for this post, it is very close to 60, this is highest ever I got, and it is also thanks to your returns too dear. Thanks again, Anna :)
Thanks for your visits!

"1/2 cup of buckwheat (kasha), cabbage salad with red onions and carrots aged for one week, and rainbow trout." - it sounds yummy to me :)!
LOL I heard that it is good when husbands don't complain...but since I am not married yet; I am not really sure lol...
60? *clap clap clap*...congrats :D!
Don't thank me; thank yourself...I keep returning cause you are such an interesting person :).
Cheers
great photo.
I guess I've seen you commenting on LivingSword's blade blogs and now I found you (or you found me more like) through BlogCatalog - I'm glad I took the time to follow the links from BC to your blog as your photos are excellent
Dave
Sorry about the late comment but as you know I have been extraordinarily busy the past week…
Very nice image Anna…even when taking photos of animals in zoos there is no guarantee of a good image!
Since I live in the Vancouver area I see bald eagles everyday but they still grab my attention they are an amazing bird! North of Vancouver in the Squamish area is the largest breading area in the world for bald eagles and we will be going up there at breeding time in the next few months. Just today on my 15 minute drive to work I saw three of them! Cool eh? We get 10’s of thousands of them in the area…I feel like soaring like an eagle! LOL
LOL LOL
Hey Max just read your comment…***bowing***…..*bowing again* :)
I will take being compared to a bald eagle any day! But I am Canadian so maybe an orca which is another British Columbia treasure is more suitable! LOL…plus they have no hair! LOL LOL
Besides I’m a red ruffed lemur so I have lots of fur! LOL
It’s nice to see your becoming more echo friendly all the time….pretty soon I will have you starting a new blog!!!! LOL LOL
You can see God’s “finger prints” all over creation and the eagle is a wonderful example….
Hey Dave its cool to see you over here at Anna’s!
Anna you should check out Dave’s blog he takes fantastic photos also, I am sure you will like I there!....Oh I just saw that you made your way over there!

Anna you have a zillion comments on this article!!!! You are such a popular lady!
LOL LOL LOL definitely: in Spring time we will have to do some blog push-ups and blog yoga to lose some weight LOL :)!
You are welcome :). I can see that he's been here already...let me see what he said LOL!
Cheers
Didn't I tell you that LS would like it lol? He's a pretty Bald Eagle :)!
LS,
"God's finger prints"? Where did I hear that...humm...LOL LOL :)!
Me, starting another blog? I don't think so...your influence on me isn't that strong lol :).
Cheers
It has been about ten years since I saw my first wild bald eagle. Now I usually encounter two or three per year athough I have yet to get a camera in action during one of these sightings.
Thanks for visiting Country Captures and dropping a comment. I like your blog........Good stuff here!
So you got bald ealges around you, oh this is amazing, I think I am going to ask you for a favor, may be you can tell them to visit Ontario, or fly my way lol. I would love to see them all the time. All we have are seagulls, so I do the same what you do, still amazed about them every time I see them, lol. Well cannot compare to Bald Eeagle, it is a beautiful bird.
BTW thanks for introductin Dave, and I already know Max very well, lol. And yes zillion comments, I still think that it was eagle and not me, even Santa wasn't able to beat him, lol.
Thanks for your kind visit as always, Anna :)
