Bald Eagle - Not Endangered, Not Threatened

Bald Eagles [Haliaeetus leucocephalus] were always and always my favourite birds. This was way before I had my hands on the camera. I never really saw them in real life until a few years ago. They are such beautiful and glorious birds. Unfortunately, most of my photos are taken at various zoos (Toronto ZooAfrican Lion SafariJurong Bird ParkSan Diego ZooHanover Zoo) and usually through the wire mesh in the cages.

I am lucky that my current 100-400mm Canon lens does not pick up anything close. I just remembered that there was another place I saw Bald Eagles. It was when we visited the Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia. However, due to the bad weather and them being far away, I only got a quick glimpse of a few pairs of eagles. I guess I now have a good reason to go back.

As my blog post title states, the Bald Eagles have not been on the threatened species list since June 28, 2007. However, once very common in the United States, the bald eagle population declined from approximately 1/2 million birds in the early 1700s to about 500 pairs in the 1960s in the 48 contiguous states of the US.
The population decline was caused by humans, by activities such as mass shootings, the use of dangerous pesticides on crops, the general destruction of habitat, and the contamination of waterways and food sources by different pollutants. However, mainly, the decline was caused by the use of DDT pesticide on crops, which caused the thinning of the eagle's egg shells and their breaking during the incubation process. The recovery took many years, and after going from 500 pairs to more than 10,000 nesting pairs in 2007, eagles were upgraded from endangered status to threatened status. On June 28, 2007, eagles were finally removed from the threatened list in 48 US states.

Very interesting post Anna! I learned a lot, I didn't know about them coming off the endangered list till just now, and it just happened, cool. The Bald Eagle has always been my fav as well, very proud bird and your photo does it justice! good eye shot, lol. This is my second attempt, I spelt your name with a small a, so I deleted the post and gave you a capital A,lol
myonlyphoto said…
Bob thanks for your comment, and glad that I could let you know something you didn't know, lol. I don't think I can compare to your stuff though. Thanks for giving me capital A, lol. You know despite all the issues blogger had recently, it will be nice if there was an opportunity for correction. I had to delete so many times too, due to missing letter or so. BTW I liked your tagging post very much, it was very entertaining to read. Anna :)
They are a gorgeous bird aren't they? I never saw one in real life in the wild until only a few years ago when I was in British Columbia. It was just sitting in a tree and I was so excited! I love your photo. It captured the magnificience of the bird so well! Cindy at Rosehaven Cottage
myonlyphoto said…
Thank you Cindy, yes they are such, I say, a magnificant birds, and I am glad that they were able to bring the population to the acceptable levels, and lets hope it will grow. Seeing them in the zoo cannot be compared to seeing them in the wild, just so different, they look free and much happpier. As I mention in my post, I saw them in Nova Scotia in pairs, and that was a intresting. Thanks for visiting, it is appreciated. Anna :)

Anna, that is terrific news! I didn't know that they are no longer considered "threatened!" It's horrible what humankind can do to decimate the environment and other species, as well as himself!

We have seen bald eagles a few times in Maine, one swooping down over the lake to catch a fish, and another time circling over a not-too-traveled road in a mostly wooded area.

Thanks for the interesting and encouraging post!

I've always loved looking at photos of the Bald Eagle, but have never got a chance to take one myself. Oh well, maybe next time... :)

Your information about the eagle is very interesting too. I didn't know that endangered stuff.

Cheers,

Hi! Great Post, Great Facts and of course Great Photo.

Excuse my ignorance but I never knew, until now with your help, that half of the world's 70,000 Bald Eagles lived in Alaska.

Well, I learn something new everyday!

Beautiful shot of this iconic bird.
i travel a lot for my photography and there are places where i see lots of eagles.
I live in the great Northwest and i climb a lot.
I have the eagles and big ravens watching us climb the mountains which are their territory.
Hi Anna,
I love your bald eagle pic, and enjoyed learning the info about them on your post.
Thanks for checking out my blog again....I am glad I am getting a few readers, as silly as my blog is!

Hey Anna,

Beautiful Bald Eagle (if he is not endangered not threatened...it must be LS LOL LOL)!

Seriously now, it is a marvellous bird: I am impressed! Well, I always loved Eagles, cause I see them as the symbol of Emperors :)!

Yes, humans are cruel to the environment; and they are ruining the eco-system *nodding*!

Have a blessed weekend!

We now commonly see Bald Eagles on the lakes and rivers in Oregon. They are indeed beautiful to see in the wild. You never get tired of watching them. Sometimes they will just be sitting on a branch or in a bush on an island in the middle of a river and will let you get quite close before the swoop off.

Another bird that has made a great comeback around here is the Osprey. Sometimes when out on a lake in the canoe, one will dive down for a fish just a few feet away from the canoe. It can startle you because they hit the water so hard!

Anna,

Your post is very interesting. I learn a lot from your blog not only the nice photos but also the interesting stories. Honestly, I never seem them in the real life. They are in zoos.

I think some people like to catch them but they don't know the effect on the food chain and that will result in extinction of species : (

Thanks very much for your post to remind us about this.

Anyways, I love this photo taken with the EF 100-400 mm f/4.5-5.5L USM which is one of my dream. I hope I could buy it in the future.

Cheers

Hi Lynda, thank you for your comments. I been holding this photo for while, and I remember clearly when the news came out in June. I was surprised about that too, since I only saw them in captivity, and yes it is sad what we can do to the nature. We don't have many eagles here where I live, but there are other parts of Canada where you can see many as in Nova Scotia. I think I will be back one they to do my photo shoot of them or if I find another better place like Alaska, US. Anna :)
myonlyphoto said…
Hi David, and thanks for your visit. If you do have a chance to take photo, please do, there is never enough photos of them to always admire. Yes it was this year I actually found more information about them too, since I decided to do more birding thus the purchase of my lens 100-400mm. But tell you David, once you get bigger lens, you want bigger next time, lol. Thanks for your comments, Anna :)

Thanks Susan for your kind comments, Anna :)

Hi Peter, thanks for your comments. I made small correction on my post, due to confusion with some numbers. The decline was in fact only in US in 48 states, excluding Alaska. And yes Alaska in US and also British Columbia in Canada is very abundant of bald eagles. Once I watched video on National Geographic about them in Alaska, it was amazing to see how many there were. And just to clarify more, I think and this is what I think, the de-list criteria are based on the nesting pairs, and not just population of the birds, which makes sense. About population numbers, every source has different numbers, so I try to be very vague in description, because never know who is right or wrong.

Yes you are right we learn something new every day, and by reading just extra. You know that the Bald Eagle is national symbol of US, but once Benjamin Franklin wanted Wild Turkey to be the national symbol of US from letters to his daughter

Learning is good....again thanks for your comments and good questions. Anna :)

Hi Max, oh girl you made me laugh again, LS an eagle, wait until he reads this, lol.

Yes they are such a beautiful birds, ang gracious. I wish we had them around, so I don't have to travel far, oh well. It is sad how harmful we can be. Once we been hiking and we were stopped by man walking his dog, and he was admiring nature so much, that at some point started to be angry and complain that we humans are such a parasites, I am not sure if I wanted to hear that, but sometimes it makes sense. We tend to invade everything, you should see how much of commercial and residential development is going on in our area, we just keep nodding our heads everytime we drive by, and say 10 years ago this was beautiful field once.

Thanks for your comment again, and if I don't see you around, you have yourself a good weekend - still laughing about LS, lol.

Anna :)

Will you are so lucky that you have them around. I didn't know that there was a similar issue with Osprey. I finally got to see one on our local pond this summer for the first time, and I know where he is and hang out all the time, and this this photo before I knew what it was: http://myonlyphoto.blogspot.com/2007/07/need-help-to-identify-this-bird-of-prey.html
Osprey are nice birds too, and I was lucky to have my 100-400mm lens ready to catch this as he was catching the fish, because all this was happening on the other side of the pond. Thanks again for your comments, and bits and pieces of knowledge. BTW I noticed you are using html link, cool it gets me to your blog fine. Anna :)

Digitalshuttermania, thank you so much for your kind comments. It is really appreciated.

I was just flipping through pages in the bird book and they had few pages of sketches of some other birds that they don't exist anymore, and the scary part is that they don't exists anymore because due to hunting, for food or for clothing decor (the feathers). Yes it is sad. However, we seem to recognize that, so hopefully all will be fine. Mind you not all birds are identified yet, and probably new species get born, just like a dinosaur age. Its all part of life and evolution.

About the lens, as I said before, once you get larger lens, it is never enough and looks like I am ready for another one. But then I was saving money for few years to get my recent equipment, so it will be probably another few years for another upgrade. Sometimes waiting is good.

Thanks again, Anna :)

He is beautiful, Anna - you captured him so perfectly!

It is great news to hear that they are off the endangered list - your post was most informative!

There are a couple of electric companies that set up web cams in various bird's nests that I usually love to watch in the spring. They have eagles, hawks, owls, and osprey. They turn them on when the birds arrive, and you see them raise their young - they are amazing. I will try to remember in the spring to forward the websites to you. You will love watching them!

Beautiful shot Anna! Also may I add, a great post as well. Very informative. We have a few eagles flying around here most of the time. Not quite sure what kind. But they are beautiful birds. Last spring we watched 4 young eagles and their parents flying around a cliff near our place. Talk about impressive.

Anna, great photo and post! I remember when the bald eagles were on the endangered list. They had been common in this area, and once more are. :D Jeff and I saw a huge bald eagle nest once when we were boating along Lake Superior shoreline. The twigs looked prehistoric bulging from the tree.

We have bald eagles in our area now and when I see a large shadowed wing span fly over the house, I run outside to make sure my cats are all right.

Hugs, JJ

Love the way you said it: 'Nature is such a gift: it's filled with gorgeous animals; amazing landscape; revigorating air to breathe...:).' - it is so true.

I tell you I am really going to be heavy santa this year, we got all these family events (bdays) in December, and visits to some relatives, especially this past two weeks, I say oh well, but then the Ukrainian Christmas is two weeks later, where now this is all Italian side, lol.

So the weekend is almost over, got to make some high fiber lunches for tomorrow's work, lol. Thanks for your comments, and I see you next week, Anna :)
myonlyphoto said…
Hi The Uneasy Supplicant, thank you so much for your visit and comments. I think in general, as much as this post is about eagles, any bird in this family is so glorious, especially when they float on the air. Unfortunately we don't have eagles around, just hawks and falcons, but then they all look the same to me sometimes. It is nice that you have those around, even if it is not eagle. Thanks again for your kind comment, and I liked you last post about doubt, it was well written and well photographed, meaning your photo. Anna :)
myonlyphoto said…
Thanks JJ, your nature, lol is great you just got it all. I think you deserve it, may be one day I make it over your side, never know to see the eagles. You know sometimes I look at the geography books or travel books, and say wow there is so much to live for, and then I don't think I will be able to see it all. And then come the areas we live, there is so much to explore locally too.

I guess you are right, these are hunting birds, so yes please watch out for your cats. I forgot that they are predators too. Thanks for your comments JJ as always it is appreciated. Anna :)

Max thanks again, hope he can find your joke in those 50 over comments, lol, may be you should hint.

And you too, then I don't feel so bad gaining some weight, lol.

I don't know if you can call high fiber lunches yammy, especially for my husband - I just fed him with 1/2 cup of buckwheat (kasha), cabbage salad with red onions and carrots aged for one week, and rainbow trout. Well, he never really complains, so I don't know if he likes it or not, for me it doesn't really matter - it wasn't the greatest combination, but as long it is beneficial I eat it.

I just looking at the total of comments for this post, it is very close to 60, this is highest ever I got, and it is also thanks to your returns too dear. Thanks again, Anna :)

Hi Anna;

Sorry about the late comment but as you know I have been extraordinarily busy the past week…

Very nice image Anna…even when taking photos of animals in zoos there is no guarantee of a good image!

Since I live in the Vancouver area I see bald eagles everyday but they still grab my attention they are an amazing bird! North of Vancouver in the Squamish area is the largest breading area in the world for bald eagles and we will be going up there at breeding time in the next few months. Just today on my 15 minute drive to work I saw three of them! Cool eh? We get 10’s of thousands of them in the area…I feel like soaring like an eagle! LOL

LOL LOL

Hey Max just read your comment…***bowing***…..*bowing again* :)

I will take being compared to a bald eagle any day! But I am Canadian so maybe an orca which is another British Columbia treasure is more suitable! LOL…plus they have no hair! LOL LOL

Besides I’m a red ruffed lemur so I have lots of fur! LOL

It’s nice to see your becoming more echo friendly all the time….pretty soon I will have you starting a new blog!!!! LOL LOL

You can see God’s “finger prints” all over creation and the eagle is a wonderful example….

Hey Dave its cool to see you over here at Anna’s!

Anna you should check out Dave’s blog he takes fantastic photos also, I am sure you will like I there!....Oh I just saw that you made your way over there!
