The only downside of winter photography is the cold temperatures. In extreme cold weather, the SLR camera sometimes stops responding. One issue is that electronics usually misbehave in cold weather. I know that because it happens to my car all the time. Every time there is a drastic temperature change, I get errors, including false alarms like engine failure. Secondly, in the cold weather, metal parts shrink, so it is possible there is a lost connection somewhere in the camera. There is no need to panic because it is a very common camera response to temperature changes.
Well, I malfunction as well in the extreme cold temperatures.
Back to creativity mode. Winter photography can be very rewarding. About 3 years ago, I captured a few photos of the evergreen trees in the field covered with snow. It was a cloudy day, and the sky was quite white. After reviewing photos, I found that when the sky met the ground, the trees looked like they were floating in the air. I almost got the floating trees. Another way to get the same effect is to position the camera towards the trees and low enough to capture the snowy field only as a background.

Thank you for sharing ^__^ and happy photographing
Nina ^__^
great tip on capturing snow and sky, sometimes I trend to forget and just shot straight
My older car resets the time on its clock to midnight whenever the temp gets below 20 degrees. I was going crazy trying to figure out why it was happening until I made the temp connection.
I like snow but not the cold, we only have had a few snowflakes this winter but that's normal.
ps, is that your lens?, if it is, wow nice one.
:D How are you doing, darling?
So true...electronical stuff tends to malfunction in cold weather...just like me lol.
But I have a question: can't someone come up with cameras that work properly under cold conditions? They have invented one that works under the water; so maybe they could invent one for extreme winter.
What a gorgeous snowy trees photo, Anna....I adore it :D!
"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication" oh yeah...Da Vinci was so right! And Armani also says this!
Anna, thank you for having shared such a gorgeous photo and lesson: it is a pleasure to learn from you :D!
Cheers
To you that may not be your best picture, but to me it looks great. Trees floating in a white sea - fabulous.
I don't have camera problems when it gets cold, because I don't go outside.Ha, ha
Happy trails.
Anna :)
The pic is not mine of the lens, but yes its close, I think mine is a bit bigger if I am correct, lol.
Thanks again Bob,
Anna :)
For this effect in Photoshop I would alter the brightness and contrast, but you already knew that... :-D
It is wonderful talking to you and bob and hearing how bad the winter is out east! This winter has been very bad for us, many days of snow fall etc when often we have years with no snow at all…..We found out that when we were in Hawaii the first couple of weeks of February it snowed a few more times which is nice as we were enjoying the sun, sand and surf! Anyways thanks for helping me feel a bit warmer…
I love your line: “sometimes I malfunction too in extreme cold temperatures or hot temperatures.” I hear you! LOL
I love the snow tree floating photo! Looks great with the black background :)
Also nice quote from Leo…I guess that makes him a minimalist!
I m adding you to my blogroll to avoid all this confusion the next time around.
You know how I landed on your blog again. I remembered your cute post titled "My baby is ready for Valentine" I search with this in google and reached your blog once again.
Thanks for your kind comments on my last post. By the way you were mentioning that you are going to post your bird images from your archives, where are they ?...Thomas
Love the quote from Leonardo!
Very nicely placed elements. This shot evokes a sense of isolation and loneliness. Great art :)
cheers
Kidding aside, yes, there are many many opportunities for variety of pictures. John thank you so much for your always kind comments, Anna :)
Yeah lol, cold weather makes us human slower, lol.
Max, excellent question about camera's for cold weather, but you know, I worked as a designer, and you know it isn't easy to design optimum product, lol, soon as you add something new, everything else tend to stop working, lol. Plus it would be very costly to have a camera for each season, lol....
No problem Max, it is my pleasure to share some of my knowledge always. Isn't blogging fun...
Anna :)
You know the bright white snow creates backlight that is why it is hard to capture the green. Same happened to my friend who took pictures of glaciers, all the background forest became dark as he took picture of the glaciers [beautiful pictures though], and he insisted that I make it digitally green.
I think there is a way to fix that, may be same as taking picture of the moon, try spot or partial metering setting on your camera and pick the trees as your main object. Hopefully may work.
Thanks Medam again.
Anna :)
Yes it took me a while to get this template going, but I wanted to have something new for 2009.
Bird, thanks again for dropping by and commenting. Anna :)
You said: 'I don't have camera problems when it gets cold, because I don't go outside.Ha, ha' - you don't go outside, and why not? - yeah me too, but it is still cold by looking out the window. And why don't you go outside, you don't have same cold as we do?
Anna :)
Hawaii must have been nice. Every friend we have who got married went to Hawaii, us we went to Greece. I am not a beach person, I love exploring, walking around etc.
LS you said: 'I guess that makes him a minimalist! - hey I want to be minimalist too, lol. Too much stuff - I get confused :).
Thanks for your cheerful comment LS, it is always nice to see you here.
Anna :)
Thanks again Thomas, Anna :) PS Good memory!
I malfunction more often in the heat than I do in the cold. I can always dress more warmly, but in the summer there's nothing I can do to cool off except be in the frigid, processed air of the AC!
Does it get very hot in the summer, where you live?
You see, I wasn't functioning properly when I left the comment, it didn't mean what I wanted to say but glad you got it. So I think I want to sleep now. LOL.
So you cannot do anything about the hot, lol, yeah me too. You know sometimes not thinking about it too much helps, lol, works with me when I am cold, and during the heat, I think I am cooked, lol.
Lynda you asked: 'Does it get very hot in the summer, where you live?' - yes and no, depends on the year. When it gets hot, it is usually hot and humind, like rainforest effect, but we also had some hot and dry moments.
Hope all is well, and take care Lynda.
Anna :)
But you function well when you take your photos, lol, they are always so good. Anna :)
I must say that I love your photo - it is really stunning, but I will give your cold weather a miss. It never gets cold enough here that our electronic equipment does not work.
I have been enjoying all your earlier posts that I missed in my absence.
