A Bit of Knowledge: Winter Photo When Sky Meets the Ground

The only downside of winter photography is the cold temperatures. In extreme cold weather, the SLR camera sometimes stops responding. One issue is that electronics usually misbehave in cold weather. I know that because it happens to my car all the time. Every time there is a drastic temperature change, I get errors, including false alarms like engine failure. Secondly, in the cold weather, metal parts shrink, so it is possible there is a lost connection somewhere in the camera. There is no need to panic because it is a very common camera response to temperature changes.

Well, I malfunction as well in the extreme cold temperatures.

Back to creativity mode. Winter photography can be very rewarding. About 3 years ago, I captured a few photos of the evergreen trees in the field covered with snow. It was a cloudy day, and the sky was quite white. After reviewing photos, I found that when the sky met the ground, the trees looked like they were floating in the air. I almost got the floating trees. Another way to get the same effect is to position the camera towards the trees and low enough to capture the snowy field only as a background.

Cool shot Anna!! you are lucky to have snow in your country... we don't have snow and we are praying to get some rains.

Thank you for sharing ^__^ and happy photographing

I love taking pics while the snow is fresh, but one should always carry extra batteries - I think that's the other thing that cold does - your camera battery stops working

great tip on capturing snow and sky, sometimes I trend to forget and just shot straight

Nice shot, Anna. Floating trees, eh?

My older car resets the time on its clock to midnight whenever the temp gets below 20 degrees. I was going crazy trying to figure out why it was happening until I made the temp connection.

OMG is that your lens Anna! I am so jealous!! Beautiful shot and a informative post! Stay warm up there OK! :D

It's beautiful, thanks for the information.
I like snow but not the cold, we only have had a few snowflakes this winter but that's normal.

Zima to chyba najładniejsza pora roku. Nawet biel wygląda ciekawie. Pozdrawiam gorąco z Olsztyna i troszkę z Sępopola, bo też mam tam dalszą rodzinę...:)

Excellent shot of the floating trees!!, you are soo lucky to have snow in your country.................NOT!!!,lol. I always have trouble with the lens contactors, but I bring the camera in to the car for a while and it gets all better.

ps, is that your lens?, if it is, wow nice one.

Absolutely a gorgeous winter shot, Anna. I think sometimes we try to hard to get that perfect picture and I agree that you just to be in the moment. We are both fortunate that we live in a place with 4 great seasons. That provides us with many opportunities for a variety of pictures. Also, it gives us something to look forward to as one season ends and the next one begins. You have a very impressive site Anna, really enjoy visiting.

Hey Anna,

:D How are you doing, darling?

So true...electronical stuff tends to malfunction in cold weather...just like me lol.

But I have a question: can't someone come up with cameras that work properly under cold conditions? They have invented one that works under the water; so maybe they could invent one for extreme winter.

What a gorgeous snowy trees photo, Anna....I adore it :D!

"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication" oh yeah...Da Vinci was so right! And Armani also says this!

Anna, thank you for having shared such a gorgeous photo and lesson: it is a pleasure to learn from you :D!

Cheers

The photo is really beautiful; one would say it is black and white. I have taken so many winter photos with white snow and green firs and pines which never look green on photos but black. That use to make me angry sometimes because I would like sometimes to capture the green colour of evergreen trees in the middle of white fresh snow.

Hello Anna, I'm sorry that I've neglected you so much... especially when so much has been going on here! I love this image, it's great to get an opportunity to take pictures in the snow. We had some spectacular cold weather here about six weeks ago and it certainly made my camera complain. Somehow she kept working though, better than I would have expected. By the way, I like your new layout (well it's new to me!)

To you that may not be your best picture, but to me it looks great. Trees floating in a white sea - fabulous.

I don't have camera problems when it gets cold, because I don't go outside.Ha, ha

Happy trails.

Thanks Nina, yes we are but sometimes we complain because it is little too cold. Hope you get rain soon, I know a bit how it is. Thanks for dropping by. Anna :)

Thanks Lissa, and thanks to let me know about batteries. I have to take my battery all the time to reset the camera, everything freezes you cannot even shut it down, lol, kind of scarry. If this happened to my TV I will be running, lol. Lissa appreciate your visit. Anna :)

Thanks Will, yes floating trees, lol, but not in reality. Yes it can happen to all cameras, you cannot see it with naked eye, but metal can shrink and expand to cause many problems. Thanks for dropping by Will, Anna :)

Roger, I took this pic from internet, so I had to go and check it out, I hate to tell you I think mine is a bit bigger lol, I have Canon 100-400mm - I emptied my pocket with this one but it was so worth it, especially for chasing birds and moon. Trying hard to stay warm Roger, having dreams about spring and summer, lol. Hey Roger thanks for the latest crack....lol. Anna :)

Thanks Thomas. The picture was taken in color, but you know with all this white sky and white snow I got back light thus the BW effect. Thanks for noticing, good eye, but good eye for the birds you have on your blog. Anna :)

Thanks Dick. I can send some more snowflakes your way if you wish, I think we have here too many, lol. Kidding aside, Dick nice to see you here again as always. Anna :)

Hi Drugi Rok W Chmurach.

Lol Bob, yes I am so lucky to have snow in my country, and be glad to use the cloud blower to send them your way, lol. Thanks for the laughs. Yes I have to go inside too to warm up, but I don't like that because of moisture due to change in temperature. I usually take my battery in and out, or loosen lens and put it back, seems to work.

The pic is not mine of the lens, but yes its close, I think mine is a bit bigger if I am correct, lol.

Thanks again Bob,
Anna :)

For this effect in Photoshop I would alter the brightness and contrast, but you already knew that... :-D

Hi Anna!

It is wonderful talking to you and bob and hearing how bad the winter is out east! This winter has been very bad for us, many days of snow fall etc when often we have years with no snow at all…..We found out that when we were in Hawaii the first couple of weeks of February it snowed a few more times which is nice as we were enjoying the sun, sand and surf! Anyways thanks for helping me feel a bit warmer…

I love your line: “sometimes I malfunction too in extreme cold temperatures or hot temperatures.” I hear you! LOL

I love the snow tree floating photo! Looks great with the black background :)

Also nice quote from Leo…I guess that makes him a minimalist!

Anna : I have been trying to get to your blog to reply to your comments on my blog for a few days now. The problem is that you have disabled your profile display for public and therefore nobody can click on your reply and come to your blog. Maybe you want to allow public access to your profile or maybe add the link of your blog in your comments whichever you are comfortable with.

I m adding you to my blogroll to avoid all this confusion the next time around.

You know how I landed on your blog again. I remembered your cute post titled "My baby is ready for Valentine" I search with this in google and reached your blog once again.

Thanks for your kind comments on my last post. By the way you were mentioning that you are going to post your bird images from your archives, where are they ?...Thomas

Winter photography is only rewarding if a photographer manages to compose and meter well. This image is something that I would spend a lot of time looking at it.

Very nicely placed elements. This shot evokes a sense of isolation and loneliness. Great art :)

Oh my god! unbelievable, are the trees flying? :) You get worse winters Anna, living so close to the north pole lol (anything north of downtown Toronto is north pole for me!)
cheers

John, thank you so much. You know sometimes I don't even know that I am in the moment, lol, yet only find out during processing. You are so right, 4 seasons are amazing, sometimes we complain because we have enough of one, but yet we should not forget that when summer comes with the heat, we will be begging for a winter, lol.
Kidding aside, yes, there are many many opportunities for variety of pictures. John thank you so much for your always kind comments, Anna :)

Max I am doing fine, so far so good :).

Yeah lol, cold weather makes us human slower, lol.

Max, excellent question about camera's for cold weather, but you know, I worked as a designer, and you know it isn't easy to design optimum product, lol, soon as you add something new, everything else tend to stop working, lol. Plus it would be very costly to have a camera for each season, lol....

No problem Max, it is my pleasure to share some of my knowledge always. Isn't blogging fun...

Thanks Medam, yes you are right it is almost black and white.

You know the bright white snow creates backlight that is why it is hard to capture the green. Same happened to my friend who took pictures of glaciers, all the background forest became dark as he took picture of the glaciers [beautiful pictures though], and he insisted that I make it digitally green.

I think there is a way to fix that, may be same as taking picture of the moon, try spot or partial metering setting on your camera and pick the trees as your main object. Hopefully may work.

Thanks Medam again.

Hey Bird, no problem. Blogging isn't the first priority. Hope all is well. So looks like the winter isn't gone yet for you...and got complaining camera, lol.

Yes it took me a while to get this template going, but I wanted to have something new for 2009.

Bird, thanks again for dropping by and commenting. Anna :)

Hey Swubird, you are just too too kind, lol. I guess I am trying to be perfectionist sometimes.

You said: 'I don't have camera problems when it gets cold, because I don't go outside.Ha, ha' - you don't go outside, and why not? - yeah me too, but it is still cold by looking out the window. And why don't you go outside, you don't have same cold as we do?

Hi Leo, brightness and contrast is right. Try also Unsharpen, and if you get around try Curves, they can give you cool effects. Not with this photo above because not much happening. Thanks Leo, Anna :)

Roger, yes mine is bigger than yours, lol. You said: 'I found out that a 2Xdoubler sucks with it!' - I was loolking at them for my 100-400mm, never enough lol, but now I will have doubts. Thanks for letting me know, I will do more research then. Thanks for the laughs. Anna :)

Hey LS, you know we complain about the snow this year, but if I recall it was bad last year, especially I remember when I was shoveling snow being pragnent few times a week.

Hawaii must have been nice. Every friend we have who got married went to Hawaii, us we went to Greece. I am not a beach person, I love exploring, walking around etc.

LS you said: 'I guess that makes him a minimalist! - hey I want to be minimalist too, lol. Too much stuff - I get confused :).

Thanks for your cheerful comment LS, it is always nice to see you here.

Hey Thomas thanks for letting me know, I swear I don't remember doing it, may be something I did not knowing lol, or may be Matthew did it, lol, he knows how to operate the mouse. Kidding aside, its all public again. Appreciate your coming back and letting me know and adding me to your blogroll. Oh the birds, yes they are coming soon, just I have over thousands of pictures to look through and with the little one gets harder.
Thanks again Thomas, Anna :) PS Good memory!

Nice shot--and it's simplicity makes the viewer focus more on the forms of the trees.

I malfunction more often in the heat than I do in the cold. I can always dress more warmly, but in the summer there's nothing I can do to cool off except be in the frigid, processed air of the AC!

Does it get very hot in the summer, where you live?

"you know since Matthew was born, I have not had much sleep, but I seems to function okay, just when cold kick in, everything goes out of wack,"
You see, I wasn't functioning properly when I left the comment, it didn't mean what I wanted to say but glad you got it. So I think I want to sleep now. LOL.
myonlyphoto said…
Thanks Lynda, I always liked simple things.
So you cannot do anything about the hot, lol, yeah me too. You know sometimes not thinking about it too much helps, lol, works with me when I am cold, and during the heat, I think I am cooked, lol.

Lynda you asked: 'Does it get very hot in the summer, where you live?' - yes and no, depends on the year. When it gets hot, it is usually hot and humind, like rainforest effect, but we also had some hot and dry moments.

Hope all is well, and take care Lynda.

Hi Anna, thanks for stopping by and for all the comments. I have been out of action for a while, with a severe case of bloggers block, but I am back in action again.
I must say that I love your photo - it is really stunning, but I will give your cold weather a miss. It never gets cold enough here that our electronic equipment does not work.
I have been enjoying all your earlier posts that I missed in my absence.
Hey Anna, when you have the time check out my last post...there's something for you there:)Peace
