Digital Postcard Series: Cedar Waxwing Fighting for Attention

Digital Postcard #0004 (Photo no longer exists)

Facts About Cedar Waxwing [Bombycilla cedrorum]

It is interesting to know that the name waxwing is not due to their slick appearance, but comes from the waxy red secretions found on the tips of the secondaries. The function of these tips is not yet known, but they may help to attract mates. Also, the Cedar Waxwing is one of the few North American birds which can survive for several months on fruit alone.

Geographical Location: Fairy Lake, Newmarket, Ontario, Canada [44°3'2"N 79°27'3"W].

Nice photo, Anna. I am always happy to see this bird as it is not very easy to see around here. I hear it's song alot when hiking. Very beautiful: http://www.learnbirdsongs.com/birdsong.php?id=10

I did see a flock of them once and the noise they made was amazing.

Thanks Will. You know I noticed that birds in our area move around. Every year they tend to move closer to my house, lucky me, and sometimes away. This time of the year we got lot of blue jays flying around, lol, what a loud bird. BTW thanks for the link. I never see then in flock, but I heard that they like to sit on the fence in large groups. Anna :)

Hi Anna.
This is a mgnificent shot of a beautiufl species. I've seen the boehmian waxing (European one), but never met the cedar. It is as beautiful as its European counterpart!

Susanne you may think so, but you know you have captured some amazing bird photos before too - remember the white heron, lol, you knew more than me. BTW I don't know which is f or m. In some birds the plumage is totally different, like red-wing black birds. I will have to check it out on the waxwing, you got me on this one. Thanks again my friend, it is always a pleasure to see you here, and more so see you back. Anna :)
