Moon Photography: What's on the Far Side of the Moon?

I often get out at night to take photos of my all-time favourite object in the sky, the moon.

I continue to wait for something to happen on the moon, or I am just a moon addict who takes 24 or more pictures of the moon every time. Decisions need to be made then. I am undecided about what photo to keep. I keep them all. My hard drive space for all my photos, not just the moon photos, is shrinking exponentially.

I do remember days where I used to create files on the 3.5" floppy, then CDs, then DVDs, and now I have a 500 GB external hard drive that is almost full. It's time for another one.

I don't know how much I can talk about the moon here when everything else has already been said: what is the moon made of, how old is the moon, and where did the moon come from? In reality, I think we are continuously learning about the moon. Answers are not definite.

Perhaps I have learned one new thing: things that we know about not just the moon but also about the universe, or Earth, are theories. For example, how did the moon form? We will never know. A lot of them are valid theories, but they are just theories—explanations based on observations, experimentation, and reasoning.

Lastly, let me leave you with my collection of moon photos I took in September and October for you to enjoy and wonder what's on the far side of the moon.

Hey JD, lol, no no no 500 gigs of moon, that's almost like one image of the moon in real size, lol. 500 gigs is all my pictures.... Thanks for your comment, yes I think I have it down, I used to use tripod, to lazy and to much time to set up, so I just get out there in the dark, shoot shoot shoot and there you go, lol, its all practice too. Thanks again for your nice comment, Anna :)

Hello Anna, great , no super shots of the Moon!

I would agree with you, we know so little yet so much about the Moon, that's why we have to go back I tells ya.

Me and the moon have a special connection, what that is I don't know, I just know it's a part of me somehow, about the far side, da, that's where the alien bases are, lol.

Excellent post Anna, as always! Filled with interesting aspects to think about and with a lot of great photos. And that development that you went trough, I guess, we are all on the same spot today too..I just bought 2 days ago anew 320GB and a 500GB external HD.... Do I shoot to many pictures too...????

Thanks for all your comments on my blog Anna! Kisses to your little "frog" xx:)xx

Just a quick note Anna....I burn all my photos to DVD's. I learned a while back that hard drives are not infallible. Save everything in RAW format and burn to DVD's. THAT is the only way. :-)
Take care...and thanks for the wonderful comments at my revamped site.

Your moon pics are always so good. I have given up with my camera, the lens is just not good enough.
Your son realy looks like a delightful and happy little fellow.

Five hundred gigabytes! Unbelievable. A few short years ago such numbers were unthinkable. In fact, even as we landed on the moon, crude computers were still wrestling with mere kilobytes. How things have changed.

I love your moon shots. They're so clear and crisp. Well done.

Happy trails.
What beautiful moon photos, Anna, and a great, lovely addicitive post. :D Your moon shots are glorious, and I hope you keep on taking them. :D

Wild wave, girlfriend. Good to see you out and about. :D

Hugs, JJ

Andrea, wow, 3 meters away, that is amazing. I tried this in the zoo, but the would not let us roll the windows down, lol. About the moon, you need at least 75-100mm lens to take such close up. Thanks again for your comment and visit also. Anna :)

Thanks Bob. Me too, I have special connection with the Moon, lol, sounds somehow romantic, lol. But kidding aside, I remember my parents got me in elementary school xmas gift - it was binoculars, I only used to view the moon, nothing else interested me. Thanks again Bob, and thanks for the camera setting tips for moon in the clouds. Anna :)

Thanks Susanne, wow two hardrives, scary how much data we generate these days. Did you ever try to got back and view them again, lol, must be thousands of them....I try sometimes randomly just to remember some of my trips....Thanks again for your comments, and hugs from Matthew are coming your way. Anna :) PS Hey did I read correctly you have surprise.....

JD you read my mind, funny you said this. I was thinking about the electrical storm coming my way and wiping everything except data on my CDs and DVDs. I got lazy, but yes I will burn all of them to DVDs, just I wished that those DVDs had more storage capability, lol, always asking for too much...Thanks again for your note, appreciated. Anna :)

Hi Max-e, good to see you here, and yes it did go through. Thanks for nice comment about Matthew. He is growing fast, and everyday, this little man of ours is acting like one - always something new, but chewing on the toes, may not be the man thing yet, lol. Yes, you definitely need better lens to take moon photos, but hey if you got binoculars, it is worth just looking at it....Thanks again Max-e. Anna :)

Thanks Medam. Yes I always find that every photo of the moon is different. I like taking photos of the full moon, but I also enjoy half and crescents, as there are more distinct features to be seen on the edges. Thanks again for your visit and comment. Anna :)
myonlyphoto said…
Thanks Merisi, no no never heard of that, lol, so what happend to that cow? As I say, to take good pictures of the moon, you need good lens, at least 75-100mm. Thanks again for your visit, you also have nice blog. Anna :)

Hi Kathy, yeah may be, lol, but you know that all these years I never realized that we only saw one side of the moon, lol, no wonder it always looked the same. Wow you too, that is lot of photos. Not sure if you know, but there are 1000GB hardrives, but I would not get one that big, I rather get few small ones, because if the big one goes, wow, that would be a lot of data lost. Kathy, thanks for your comment, it is appreciated. Anna :)

Hey swubird, lol, you are right that kind of numbers were unthinkable. I still remember my first computer, 8 MgHz speed, and hardrive space, not sure but definitely many times smaller than the CD.

Swubird, thank you for your comment, appreciated, there will be more Moons to come in the near future. Anna :)
myonlyphoto said…
Thanks JJ, oh there will be many more Moons to come. JJ thanks for your nice comment, and have you got any snow yet. Next time you are back here, look up the Autumn photos just below the banner, we had 2 inches of snow, but then melted in 3 days.....Thanks again, Anna :)

Hi Anna! Have you ever wondered how many sets of eyes have scanned our brilliant moon, be they man or beast.

And I must say, your external hard drive would find it impossible to record the names behind these eyes!

From the very first time mankind set eyes upon it, little has changed in its appearance but we still hold it in awe.

So will your child, his children and there children and so on and so on, until the end of time.

Take Care,
Peter

Anna - I thought Pink Floyd answered that on March 24, 1973? LOL! It was a great album, even if it did leave the question unanswered.

This week Bob has us all looking for the daytime moon. Let us know if you get a photo of it.

Amazing images of the moon Anna. The details and contrasts are excellent. Years ago, astronomy was a hobby of mine and I always enjoyed looking at the moon through my telescope. These shots are fantastic, great work! I just bought a 1 terabyte ext hard drive so I know what you mean, it seems like they are never big enough.

Moon is the only natural satellite of Earth, and is the largest natural satellite to-5 in the solar system. Moon does not have its own light source and light Moon actually came from the reflection of sun light. The average distance of the Earth-Moon from center to center is 384,403 square kilometers, about 30 times the diameter of Earth. Moon diameter is 3,474 km, [1] slightly smaller than a quarter the diameter of Earth. Moon is in sync with the orbit of Earth, this causes only one side of the moon surface can be observed from Earth. Orbit causes the usual rotation sync with the usual revolusinya. As in this picture, we can enjoy the moon surface images. A beautiful moment. Thank you Anna. Regards from Yogyakarta Indonesia.

Hello Anna,

That is a lot of external hard disk space to fill in with the moon, girl lol!

Anyway, I loved the Moon photos...there is something about the moon that mystifies us all (it seems) :D!
I just can't get enough of them!

A big hug to you and Matthew :)!

Cheers

Hey Peter, I wonder many times, and especially that you and me, we both can see the same moon, same face. What a powerful comment you gave me, wow, so inspirational and something too look forward, especially knowing that one day Matthew will be looking at it, then his children, grandchildren, and so on. Thanks again for your nice comment as always. Anna :)

Thanks John, your photography is stunning, I still cannot get over it, the last construction site at night, and not to mention your grandaughter. Moon is always nice to photograph, I still have not got grasp of Moon included in the landscape, may be some day. However, you got telescope, I would love to get one, but I would have to get out in the field somewhere, otherwise, I probably get arrested, lol, if I use it around my house. Thanks again, Anna :)

Thanks Max. I had to correct my post a bit, as my hardrive is getting filled with all my pictures including moon, lol, you are the second person said that, lol. I guess I was typing late at night, or probably thinking of Matthew. And speaking of Matthew, he is sending hugs and kisses your way. Max, my dear, thank you again for your lovely comment always. Hi Anna!

Marvellous Moon photos!

A “3.5 floppy”….must be before my time like 8 tracks…. ;)

As for the Moon here it is….

14 Then God said, “Let lights appear in the sky to separate the day from the night. Let them mark off the seasons, days, and years. 15 Let these lights in the sky shine down on the earth.” And that is what happened. 16 God made two great lights—the larger one to govern the day, and the smaller one to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set these lights in the sky to light the earth, 18 to govern the day and night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.
- - Genesis 1:14-18

Thanks LS, 8 track lol, that was before my time. Thanks for the nice quote, I must say God is good, whatever he created serves excellent purpose, Genius I must say. Thanks again for sharing this quote from bible, I read it many times, as I usually stop reading the bible after the world was created, lol, but then I would just flip and read selectively. Anna :)

Hi Nina, thank you so much for your comment. Yes, moon is beautiful and also mysterious. I love looking at it too, no doubt.
About the camera, I have Canon 20D, but to get pictures like this lens with better zooming capability is required, I used to shoot with 75-300mm Canon zoom lens, and now I shoot with 100-400mm zoom lens. Anna :)
