The Elegant Starling

The last and most popular birds during the fall were Starlings. They like to hang out in big groups, and it is quite fascinating to watch them pecking on the grass and keeping busy. Birds come and go, and as the winter has now passed, I cannot believe how many birds have arrived here. Even though there is still a lot of snow on the ground, the birds have already started to sing early in the morning. Yes, we almost don't have to use the clock buzzer to wake us up. The Red-winged blackbirds are already hanging on the sides of the road, and the Canada Geese are flying over our heads. I wonder if any of them are confused because of all the snow still on the ground.

On a side note, an interesting note about Canada geese.

Once Canada geese arrive here in Canada, they are almost everywhere, and you better wear shoes. Goose poop is everywhere. So, they are protected here in Canada; we cannot really do anything. However, I read a sad piece of information from one of my blogger friends, JB from JB's Big World: "A sad fact is that the Canada Goose is considered a game bird and it is widely hunted in Texas!". That is sad. Thanks, JB, for letting us know.

Few days left to vote. Thanks to all who voted on the topic of how many posts I should publish per week. There are not many statistics going on, but in the future I will try to at least post two posts per week. Also, if you noticed, I finally rolled up my sleeves and started to play around with the Blogger template. Successfully, I added an icon to the title of the post and also small bullet icons to the lists on the sidebar. Learning something new every day is fun.

Hi Anna! We have Starlings. Lots of Starlings. Thousands of Starlings. Did I say we have a lot of Starlings? LOL!

They flock to our feeders at certain times of the year and crowd all the nicer birds out.

At other times of the year when nesting by the hundreds in our hedge, they squawk and dive bomb you whenever you get close.

When I think of Alfred Hitchcock, I think of Starlings, not crows!

I think they are even an officially recognized pest in the U.S. Imported from Europe long ago and now run amok.

Now we need to import a Starling eating Hawk or something.

Nice photo, though!

You captured that Starling rather well, I love the details in the feathers!

Thanks Kriz. I will see you soon. Anna :)

LOL Will, lol, you are funny. But I have to admit you are right, once they are around, they are around. I heard about starlings being pests, but hey nothing is perfect, lol. I remember when we lived in Europe, starlings and crows where everywhere too. Lol, about the Starling eating Hawk, lol, at least you are not thinking about other extermination process, just the natural way, lol. Thanks Will for your inputs, and a bit of humor was nice too. Anna :)

Hello jfargo, nice to hear from you again, and thank you so much for your kind comment. I was lucky that day that that little guy just wanted to be photographed, lol, in fact as much as we have many here, one on one, they are quite an interesting bird. Thanks again, Anna :)

Wonderful picture. I think two posts each week is good. The icon in the title is new for me. You can change many things in blogger and I like it to try it out. But I always go back to the first template I have created.
Maybe I should change the header, yours is great.

What a great shot, you have really captured the details. We have starlings and they are a pest, they really do swarm the garden, and are afraid of no-one, but all the same they are very beautiful!

Beautiful shot Anna. Well done. He/She looks regal. I've noticed the same thing about the birds. Lots of snow and they are coming. Perhaps spring is around the corner?

He is beautiful, Anna! Very great shot.

Thanks for all your nice comments too. :-)
That is a great birdie photo. And yes, it is sad that some of the geese probably don't make it back home to Canada.....it makes me really sad.
I am glad lots of birdies are coming back to see you now....we are still waiting for some different birdies to come to our bird feeder.
Hope to see you at my blogs again soon!

P.S. I like 2 posts per week idea for you!
Anna, what a great starling shot. Jeff was just admiring it too. I know we have them around but I have never seen one this close up. :D

We have lots of Canadian geese too, and I know what you mean about wearing boots. I always wonder what the homeowners think about their lawns when they live long the river. :D

Wonderful photo, Anna! This starling is beautiful and I like the details in the feathers. I have never seen any starling close up and haven’t had any experience about them. It is new for me that many people think about them being pests.

Thank you very much for your always nice and kind comments.:-)
Have a nice weekend!

Hi Anna,

This is a beautiful picture. These birds have been visiting my feeders lately. They hog the feeders, but I don't really mind because they're so pretty and they indicate that spring is really finally here! If they get to be too much, I wave my hand at the window and they fly off so other birds can have their turn. Last year I was able to watch them feed their babies right outside my window. What a treat!

Is it my imagination, or is your blog different? It's really sharp looking! I like it so much!

We also have a few Starlings... the best thing about them is if you get them nesting locally you can train them to mimic phones and such like.. they mimic other birds. I have heard many a cell phone ring... and then realised the noise was from a Starling... Type in Starling on you Tube and you will come across them sing and talking.

See a lot of starlings out in the country here but not so many locally.

I'm thinking about shifting pattern of posts to two or three main ones a week - I enjoy posting, but it is time consuming now we're coming into spring (and the grass starts growing etc!!)

Thanks Dick for your comment. Yes I think two will be good for me too, just have to get over my busy season first. I think header is the most easy part to update, however, sometimes it is hard to decide. If you change yours let me know, I would love to see it. Thanks Anna :) Blogger is fun to edit, but I work first with test blog to test any changes in the code.

Andrea thank you for your nice comment and visit. Anna :)
myonlyphoto said…
Thank you Mima. I think you are right about them being pests, but you know any bird population above 50 birds probably is a pest. We have those populations every where, especially Canada Goose, house sparrows. All in different times during the year. And you are absolutely right, they are kind of nice bird, a lot of detail if you look up close. Thanks again for your comments and visit Mima, Anna :)

Hi JD,
thank you for your comment. So you got lots of birds flying in too, lol, yeah spring around the corner, or the birds just didn't know about the snow. Hope your spring arrives soon. Anna :)

Hello JB, yes I always wondered what happens to some geese when they leave for winter. Sad, because some of them mate for life too. Thanks for your always nice comments and voting. Anna :)

Hi JJ, thanks, and I think he liked to be photographed, was posing for me in every direction, lol. You are right it is hard to see them up close too, but thanks to my 100-400mm lens (almost like telescope), I can actually capture those birds up close. Actually that was the purpose of this lens, I kind of started new hobby - birding. Lol, about Canada geese. I think we should change the name to International Geese, as they seem to be everywhere, lol. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Anna :)

Hi AVCR8TEUR, nice to see you again, and thanks for your comment. I think this starling was eyeing the birdfeeder. However, I think they are usually type of bird that eats off the ground. I am not sure if they do feed on seeds, they seem to be more on the lawns and pecking on the grass for worms. Now I think I will have to check it out, lol. Thanks again, Anna :)

Hi Merging Point. Great note, its true, and this is not the only bird that was created, there are about 10 000 of them, and yet many not discovered yet, and not including all other species - I think our Creator was a genius. Thanks for sharing, Anna :)

Hi Medam, thank you for your nice comments. Glad that you enjoyed my photo. And no problem, I always enjoy coming over to your blog, especially for the refreshing pink background, spiced up with beautiful images. Thanks again, Anna :)

Hello Sandpiper. Thank you so much for your comment. Glad that you enjoy them in your birdfeeder. You are right we just have to clasp few times and give a turn to other birds or animals, lol. You said: 'Last year I was able to watch them feed their babies right outside my window. What a treat!' - oh that was a real treat. I witness the same, but with the gracle birds. It was really amazing to watch.

No it is not your imagination, I added couple of things to my blog, like bullets and small icon to the post title. Still working on the minor details, but at times I am bit scared to screw things up, lol. Thanks for noticing.

Anna :)

Hi Tom, oh boy you too. I think every one has Starlings, it is no surprise, lol. Wow that is some kind of training, I was not aware of that, and I did not know that they mimic other birds. I saw them calling out once, it was amazing how their neck area was moving. I will check it out, thanks for the tip. Thank you to for your comment and visit. Anna :)

Hi Julie, thank you for your comments. Yes blogging can be sometimes consuming, and the thing the list of visitors is growing too. I think too two posts is probably the best, so I can at least enjoy outside and still blog, but you know still snow on the ground, so it will be a while until we see green grass. Thanks again, Anna :)

I am imagining that birds are around your town and singing songs everyday. Well, it must be the wonderful scene. In my home, there are some birds as doves and some birds that I don't really know their names and they are singing songs right now (06:00 am in Thailand now).

Have a nice day.

I didn't think that the starlings were originally from this continent but were brought here by humans. They are quite invasive around here and almost seem like they are squeezing out other native species. I'm not sure about this, but that is what I heard.

Hi Anna;

What a great starling image!!!!!

A beauty of a bird, it is strange we often do not truly appreciate the creatures we see all the time, an amazing little bird….

Chocolate Girl was just walking past and saw the photo and was very impressed…. “oohhh ahhhhh”….

We had a huge wing of Canada geese fly by yesterday; I counted over 100 of them! One of my favorite sights in nature….I love the move they do just before landing on water, you know that little flip dodge thing…

We have Canada Geese here in the Vancouver area all year round, the locals’ just watch the migratory birds come by and then move on. Yes the local population never leaves…

Canada Geese are quite prolific, yet hunting is so very popular in some circles, for example the situation for wild bison in Montana is very sad…the moment they wonder out of Yellowstone they are rounded up and shipped off for the slaughter house.

Great work on the blog “look” Anna.. Anna I love to see the photos you post but the best part is reading your take on things and learning about you….

What is your very favorite bird?

Thanks DSM, yes the poor things are trying to sing the in cold, but shortly we should have nice weather. It will be are real fun to watch the mating season, lol, than parenting season. Thanks again for your kind comments, and nice to hear that you are enjoying the birds that early in the morning. Should snap some photos too, I would love to see it. Anna :)

Swubird, thank you, but I am still working on it. I am glad that I got birdfeeder last year, so lot of my bird photos came from my backyard. Thanks for the comment on my blog layout. The icon addition requires playing with the template code. If you need help, I can suggest how I did, however, each template is different, so it requires a bit of investigation. I was really careful, and paranoid, lol. Thanks again for all your kind comments. Anna :)

Hi Kathy, thank you. You are right, when I see them on the side of the road, its like small black oval eggs digging on the ground. They are numerous species as you said, we have many, lol. May be they can eat all the mosquitos that will be coming this spring due to wetness from the melting snow. For adding icons instructions, I searched through google and that gave me some blogs that specialize on that stuff. Let me know if you want to know more, may be I can forward you some stuff. Thanks again, Anna :) PS yes I was clever, but a bit paranoid too, lol.

Hello Anna!

"oh thank you so much for your warm comments always." - you are most welcome, darling :D!

"I think I should start blushing soon, lol, you are so kind." - LOL I totally get you...sometimes I think the same thing lol....

"Max, yes you did spoke that much, lol, but it is all good stuff, you are the only one who always comes back, and your come backs are always appreciated. Let me know if you want this Top Commentators code, and I will send you if you wish, or post." - lol I am so talkative lol! Oooh, that is so sweet: but you see, I love conversing with you (you are a swell lady) :D! I already have a "Top commentators" widget, remember? You are my number one top commentator :D!

"I like changes I did too, but I tell you I was a bit paranoid when implementing, lol. Thanks again for your visit, Anna :)" - paranoia, how I do get you! I am so paranoid that I actually create a test blog and then only implement on the real one after testing the new look in full (crazy, huh?)! Once again, you are most welcome, dear :D!

"PS Yes birds are all good to me, even when some of them just scream instead of signing in the morning, lol." - LOL LOL LOL at least you do not have peacocks nearby (I do, they also like to scream like crazy at 6am)!

Great conversation, my friend; thanks!

The starling is beautiful, Anna, and your photo does him/her? justice.

Also, the bullets look very nice.

Sorry I missed the vote. I have no idea what the optimal number of posts per week should be, but I think having at least two gives a blog some continuity.

Of course, sometimes I'm manic with ideas and publish more, and for that reason, I don't expect any one to read all my posts! lol...

Hope you area feeling well by now, dear!
Anna, I opened my door and the birds still aren't singing this morning. I wonder if that's because of the snow yesterday. But the weatherman has said 40's for the daytime temps. That sounds like melting snow/rivulet weather. I can't wait to see our creek turn into a raging river.

Good morning, dear friend!!!

Hi LS, thank you so much for yours and CG's comments. They are always appreciated. You are so right, sometimes we ignore things that we see every day, and one day we stop and look at it, and oh, what have I been missing. It's all applies to life, sometimes we need to step back and see what we already have, instead of chasing more and more....

You said: 'Chocolate Girl was just walking past and saw the photo and was very impressed…. “oohhh ahhhhh”….' - thanks CG, your photography is amazing also.

You said: 'We had a huge wing of Canada geese fly by yesterday; I counted over 100 of them!' - wow that many, but you know we see that too, next time I will snap a picture to see if I go over 100, lol.

You said: '...you know that little flip dodge thing…' - trust me I know, lol.

Some Canada Geese stays here too, but I think they will not stay the following winter, lol.

You said: 'wild bison in Montana is very sad…the moment they wonder out of Yellowstone they are rounded up and shipped off for the slaughter house.' - that is sad, I wish we would never do that.

LS thank you so much for your lovely comment, and enjoying my posts. I think you know, but I will say it again, I appreciate all.

You asked: 'What is your very favorite bird?' - hard to say, I like them all, but I always come back to the house sparrows, they are just so happy all the time.

Thanks again for all, Anna :)

You said: 'at least you do not have peacocks nearby (I do, they also like to scream like crazy at 6am)!' - you got peacocks nearby, wow, I love those birds, when at the zoo I still cannot get them to open their feathers up, but I know what you mean about their screaming, lol, they are in fact very loud. The funny thing is that they actually go and sit on the trees too, and once in the while you see this big bird flying down, lol, it looks so funny.

Hey I am having great conversation with you too. Thanks again, Anna :)

Good morning to you too JJ. Yes my birds did not sing today also, and yes we had high winds, freezing night and some snow, and there you go, all birds are now hiding again. "trust me, I have one of those too, lol." - LOL one more thing in common :)...

"you got peacocks nearby, wow, I love those birds, when at the zoo I still cannot get them to open their feathers up, but I know what you mean about their screaming, lol, they are in fact very loud." - I have peacocks nearby indeed, and beautiful ones too! They open their feathers a lot here; and then there are the baby ones (they so cute)!

"The funny thing is that they actually go and sit on the trees too, and once in the while you see this big bird flying down, lol, it looks so funny." - oh, sometimes they fly over the fence and go to the kids school and the small park we have in my neighbourhood, it is very nice! Hi Anna, your starling is quite a hansome fellow. We have the European Starlings that were introduced and have become quite prolific and a pest.
We have other varieties too, but our Glossy Starling is my favourite - a beautiful bird, usually shy and difficult to photograph.

Hi Max-e, thanks. I think this also came from Europe. They may be pest in my area too, but I don't look at them like that. Since I started birding last year, I admire every bird, lol. The best photo shoot of these birds is on the sunny days, I think this is the way the coloring works on their feathers. Thanks again, Anna :)

You said: 'We had a huge wing of Canada geese fly by yesterday; I counted over 100 of them!' - wow that many, but you know we see that too, next time I will snap a picture to see if I go over 100, lol.

I respond:
LOL
Instead of singing 100 bottles of beer on the wall it will be 100 Canada geese flying above! LOL

So you love the house sparrow…wow great choice, some may say the simple sparrow but I say super sparrow as they make me feel super when I watch them. So many birds so little time….

By the way I have photos of albino peacocks….I noticed your conversation with the MaxGal…
myonlyphoto said…
Thanks Max, that is great. Wishing you nice weekend. Anna :)

LS I think big flock of hundreds of geese may be a great poster on my wall, but lol on your 100 beer bottles.

Lol, calling them super sparrows, that is great you get that feeling, lol, kidding aside, the simplicity in nature if often overlooked, we tend to go after external beauty, but the internal beauty is even greater.

And now is me contradicting myself, about peacocks, lol. Well like I said, I like them all. BTW I searched your blog, and I cannot find the albino peacock, did he leave before I arrived? lol.

Oh and before I forget, my latest post from yesterday actually gives you a bit info on sparrows, lol. Anna :)
