Digital Postcard Series: Canada Goose In Canada

Digital Postcard #0007 (Photos no longer exists)

Facts About Canada Goose [Branta canadensis]

It is believed that there are as many as 11 different races of Canada Goose. The Canada Goose is often called the Canadian Goose; however, in the ornithological standard, this name is not used. Canada Geese are named for Canada, even though they can be found all over North America. For the local people, the Canada Goose is a very common bird, and we tend to ignore them most of the time. For foreigners, this bird can be very exotic. Just imagine a Japanese visitor chasing our geese with a camera. I didn't have to; I saw it.

Facts About McKenzie Marsh, Aurora, Ontario

Photo taken at McKenzie Marsh. Located in Aurora, Ontario, Canada [44°1'8"N 79°28'1"W] on St. John's Sideroad between Bayview Avenue and Yonge Street, McKenzie Marsh is a man-made pond that evolved into a beautiful marshland full of many different bird, animal, and insect species, one of which is the Canada Goose.

Anna:

That's a beautiful chow, well composed and cropped for maximum affect. I don't know how you do it, but you should take these fabulous and have a book made---a commercial book.

I love the write up too. Light, but very informative with just a touch of humor. Well done.

Happy trails

Hi Anna,

nice to see your fantastic shot of those beautiful Canada geese. I thought they will come down to us over winter?...*smile... send them down, it's a little bit warmer here... it's "only" in the 60's...and we have the heat on, can you believe that? :)

Have a wonderful time and kisses for Matthew,
Susanne

Hi Anna - they are becoming quite common around here too - but I never tire of watching them. I draw the line at chasing them with the camera though - LOL!

Nice photo as always, Anna! Interesting that you actually have them in Canada still. I thought they had all migrated to the fields behind my house. They fly over by the hundreds every day. We almost have to use umbrellas to walk around out back!

That's lovely! :)

Humans don't eat nearly enough of these birds. Because they're EVERYWHERE. Thankfully, not in the jungle - the alligators eat them. But they were everywhere in Denver. Nasty things, pooping everywhere. ;-)
Anna: What a neat photo, I love the Canada Geese that stay in my area of Ohio all year.
lissa said…
how serene they seem, gliding on the water's surface, I didn't have a clue of the names but thanks for the info

Very good picture.
I like these birds.
(japanese tourists are sometimes a bit strange to our eyes:years ago one of them tryed to take a picture of me in Venice,I was moving thinking he wanted to shot the San Marco church,I was between him and the church, but he began to move the camera with me......)
(I wasn't dressed like a goose,of course)
Anna, Beautiful image, hope you and family have a wonderful holiday and a happy new year...

Great shot Anna! I see they were introduced to New Zealand, our eastern brothers, as a game bird and have now become what some people would describe as a pest. Is this the case in Canada?

BTW Did you hear that camels are getting out of hand in northern and western Australia, and that they're about spend $19 million to cull their numbers down.

Wishing you and your family all the best for Christmas and the New Year!

Take Care,
Peter

We have quite a few Canada Geese down here in Tennessee as well. Thanks for the lesson and for the information about the marsh. The picture is absolutely gorgeous.

«Louis» will send the link to this post to his brother in Texas, who has just sent «Louis» a photo of Canadian geese looking for relief from the winter there.
Lynda Lehmann said…
And they are quite beautiful, Anna. It's my guess that you have quite a bit more open land and wildlife around you in Canada, than we have on the Eastern Seaboard of the USA. So you are fortunate to be able to get out there, with your camera, and find the birds in adundance.

I agree with Swu. I like the writeup, short but informative. And I agree that you should put these in a book or make them commercially available. You might want to make a book that people can buy at Zazzle or one of the other sites that offers multiple products?

Again, have a beautiful Christmas, dear Anna.

Hello Anna!

How peaceful and friendly the geese look in the picture.... But we never know when they are angry and want to attack us! Oh and careful where you step in their grazing land!!

I have seen Japanese tourists and they probably saw an Indian guy chasing the geese with his camera too... hehehe!

Anna, when Don and I first married, this was his favorite animal. Then in recent years they got so prolific that we all wanted to just shoo them away. All that poo in the grass and on the dock at the lake! Now, I think the DNR have managed to manage them (I heard they actually flew some out to Arizona - on airplanes!) because I don't see them in the same numbers, thankfully.

I never knew they should be called Canada geese. Thanks for that tip.
RW said…
I want to know why those Canadian Geese hang around here all year long? Go back home and stop pooping on my car, I tell them! Whats worst is they are always found swimming around the waste ponds, how can people hunt these birds? When they literally swim around in the sewer.

That said... Awesome photo Anna! You know I love your work and your a awesome friend! :)

Hi Anna,
I enjoy looking both at geese and ducks while floating and playing and diving in the water. I find these lovely creatures very fun and interesting. I like the gees from your photo; they are really beautiful. Your photo is so clear and sharp; it's great as always!
Thanks for the great reminder to appreciate the beauty in so-called common birds. Many scorn the Canada Goose, which doesn't seem fair. I love to watch them, although I do tread carefully in places where they congregate:)

Thanks Susanne, I know they fly to your place. But some like to stay here around. So you like heat, that's nice. I could use some too, its about -10 C here. Susanne dear hugs and kisses from Matthew, and me too, lol. Always appreciate your kind comment and visit. Anna :)

Marvin you know I think our shore of the Lake of Ontario is pooped like that, lol. I asked that questions once too, there are so many homeless people around, they could use nice roasted goose like that. I am not sure if you can eat them though, lol, physically I mean. But then I heard stories that people eat all kinds of birds, like American Robins, lol, and ouch. Anna :)
myonlyphoto said…
Thanks Fishing guy. Yes I like them too. Appreciated for your kind comment and visit. Anna :)

Peter we are not allowed to hunt for them. We have them a lot, but I think we just learn how to live with them. I guess we have created many man made ponds, so they always will concentrate in those areas. Thanks for the info about camels, wow, that is lot of money.

Wishing you the same, and more to come. Anna :)

roentarre thanks so much for your beautiful words. appreciate. Anna :)

Thanks Lynda, no we don't have much land, but we have trails that have lot of nature. Our town is not expanding in size, but in residential buildings, and that is sad.

Lynda I think over me, you should publish book first, your writing and photos are so inspirational. However, thanks for the tip.

Again thanks so much for your kind support. Appreciated my friend. Anna :)

Hey Priyank I say the same, I am actually scared to get close, lol, good thing I got the photo lens, lol. I know what you mean about the poop, lol, but once its dried then it is okay, lol. Thanks for the humorous comments, nice to see you back. Anna :)
myonlyphoto said…
Ruth that is actually funny story, lol. Glad the relocation program worked. Thanks for dropping by, always appreciated. Anna :)
myonlyphoto said…
Hey Roger may be they just like you, lol. Funny that they seemed to cause more problems around you. They avoid pooping on my house, lol, so may be that is why I get all the skunk and raccoon treats. Thanks Roger for the laughs, and your comment is always appreciated my friend. Anna :)
myonlyphoto said…
Thanks Medam. You know I like them in the water also. The interesting part is that I think someone is feeding them [apparently we not supposed to], because whenever I come around they swim closer to the shore. Medam, thanks again for your visit and kind comment. Anna :)

Thanks Carol for your kind comment. I like the too, and they seemed to be great photo subject. Yes I am careful too, lol. Thanks again, Anna :)
