Back in 2007, I had this great opportunity to capture over 50 photos of the juvenile Cedar Waxwing [Bombycilla cedrorum]. The amazing thing about all juvenile or baby birds is that they don't know the definition of danger at this early stage of life. They are very vulnerable; thus, the function of the parent is to protect them.
Out of many, here are the photos; note on one of them the yellow marking on the tail. The nice thing was that I was able to get very close; we are talking 2 feet away. I guess he or she must have been really new to the world and enjoyed my photo shoot. This is my second great photo of the juvenile bird, as some of you who have been blogging with me for a while know my famous juvenile Barn Swallow [Hirundo rustica], the one I've been hiding my face behind. Then I had to shed some feathers and show you the real me. The moment was the same: I was able to get very close with my camera, but not too close because parents were around. The interesting part is that I recall those moments when Matthew was a tiny baby and would go from person to person and just be there, look around, smile at everyone, and observe. Sometimes I wondered if he knew who his mother was. And now, at 10 months and 1/2, he knows. Matthew recognizes familiar faces; occasionally, after getting to know someone, he will eventually go to them, but not for long. In the last couple of weeks, Matthew has learned how to be affectionate. Unfortunately, he started by hugging a stuffed bear first, but he is now hugging us too—of course, when he wants to. We got him his first shoes this week, so guess what? He is ready to go outside, and yet he does not forget the jacket. I wonder sometimes how much he knows; it seems like everything we do, he wants to do: walk, talk, eat, write, answer the phone, and cook.
Spring is finally here, and all the birds in our neighbourhood are singing away—yes, mating season. Those red-winged blackbirds just don't give up. Geese are flying from place to place. Crows from one end to the other, and the seagulls are the same. This is not a very exotic bird crowd, but hey, it's a sign of spring, and soon we will be out for adventures too.

Yes, birds, animals and all creatures great and small have a lot in common with us humans! Afraid of no one in the beginning, we soon learn that mum and dad are the most trusted.
As young parents we couldn't wait to hear them talk. It's only when they forget to stop talking that we perhaps wished they were babies again!
As for taking their first steps, that is the beginning of seeking their independence and before you know it they've left home; but always welcomed home when they want to!
Take Care,
Peter

Matthew had better NOT be cooking yet! Else I'd say you have a prodigy on your hands, lol...
Our daughter was the same way. Even until she was two or so, she would go into anyone's arms. We had to actually TEACH her to be more defensive. In the supermarket, she would sit in the cart and hijack every person who went past. "Hello, Man!" she would say. Or "Nice to see you, Lady!" It was adorable.
How I long for those innocent days. I hope you enjoy every day with Matthew, because it goes so fast!
These are absolutely beautiful pictures of birds. You should really be published.
My Queen is an avid bird watcher. She doesn't photograph them, but every year a group of birds make their nest under the eves of the house next door. Their roof is close to our upstairs bathroom window, so the birds are only a few feet from us. Every year, the Queen tracks the progress of a new family from the time they're hatched until they learn to fly. She loves them all, and watching them grow from hatchlings to full grown birds is a wonderful saga.
Happy trails.
Sounds like Matthew is starting to get around - and he knows what he wants when he does!
Such a fun age - can't believe it's been 10 1/2 months already!
You are good at this, Pl. show us more images of birds you have taken in the past.
And thank you for the link to my blog. Appreciate it...Thomas
Aren't kids great? It's quite the learning curve for both Parents and children, but it is neat to watch them grow and learn new things.
Anna :)
Peter you said: 'As young parents we couldn't wait to hear them talk. It's only when they forget to stop talking that we perhaps wished they were babies again!' - I know what you mean, we are like that to, hopeing his first words will be I love you, lol.
Peter you said: 'As for taking their first steps, that is the beginning of seeking their independence and before you know it they've left home; but always welcomed home when they want to!' - I will remember this. Thanks for sharing.
Peter your thoughts are always appreciated. Thanks for the nice tips. Anna :)
Oh w Olsztynie zima trzyma. U nas tez, to zdjecie jest z ostatniego lata.
Pozdrawiam, Anna :)
Good for your Queen, birdwatching is very rewarding. This is one of the reasons I took on that hobby too, but I had to get my camera, boy it cost me an arm and a leg, lol.
Swubird it is always a pleasure to have you here. Anna :)

Anna :)
Yes it is amazing to watch them grow, and I enjoy every minute of it - [children of course, lol, oh and may be birds too]. But you are right it is also a learning curve for both sides. Anna :)
Thanks for the "Matthew" update, it's all a miracle isn't it. It makes me think of my children at that age.
Have a nice weekend
Blessings,Ruth

It's really unusual to be so close, even to a juvenile.
Bye
And I am sure he knew who his mother was right from day one! Now he is just starting to show it in more grown ways. New shoes, spring time, I predict you will be getting your exercise chasing him around by this summer. Have fun!
Simply fabulous!
All three photos put as smile on my face…interestingly I think my favorite is the third photo…not just because it has an intriguing profile with pretty head feathers standing up and downy chest with a pretty colored tail but because of the excellent imagery of its claws on the leaves.
If Matthew is starting to mimic everything you guys are doing you better not let him see you drive! Of course this also means he will be a blogger! LOL If he learned to cook by watching you what would he make?
Bring on Spring! I am waiting baby! LOL Cold…windy…and rainy here today but the flowers in a surge of courage are poking their heads up…crazy things…you know I love the “common” birds…Canada geese, seagulls, crows are all wonderful…Currently we have massive amounts (read thousands) of bald eagles and swans (read hundreds) in our area…
Beautiful image here. The plumage looks so full and wonderful.
Spring is definitely here

How do you add the pictures on "Polariod moment"
Thanks again for your comment Andrea.
Anna :)
Great capture, I love the vivid green background here.
Very sharp capture, splendid image :)
He has to be a blogger, one day he will have to comment on the all archived posts about him, lol.
Let Matthew drive? He is already driving lol, by walking where he wants. And cooking, I don't know but he is everywhere in the kitchen, and hope it will be a good food.
It is nice to have birds. You got bald eagles - oh send some over. And crows, when I was in Banff, these crows are huge. We have them here, but they are lean ones, lol. The spring is here, but its cold, and windy and sometimes rainy. Oh well it will be here eventually.
LS thanks for the refreshing comment. Anna :)
The Polaroid Moment, I created in Adobe Photoshop. I just created polaroid frame layer, then inserted photo layer behind, and text layer in the front and wohhhaaa its all done. The rotation, I just copy all the layers into new layer set, duplicated that set, merge it, and rotated behind first set. That is all. Hope you know what I am talking about....
Thanks for the link again, will visit later.
Anna :)
Your cedar waxwing shots here are fabulous. The light is perfect and the baby seems to enjoy the loving attention that you are giving it. I got some juvenile waxwing photos a couple of years ago, but it was after they had fledged. They were busy eating hawthorn berries. Your photography and personal touches are wonderful.

each time i come by your blog i am sure i will find some joy for my eyes :)
hope you and your loved ones are doing great :)
Such a cute bird! :)....I loved it!
Yes, Matthew is going through a phase that all older (or only) children go through: they emulate their parents, since early age. I was like Matthew - I knew stuff that my mother would ask herself "where on earth did she learn this?"...but we learn from our parents (you see, we spend a lot of time observing you guys lol).
Second children don't seem to emulate parents that much, because they are busy adoring their brothers and wanting their attention all the time LOL...
Fantastic photos, and fantastic text, darling! :D
Cheers
Gorgeous bird photography you got lately.
Nice how you could get close and capture them.
Thanks for the great update on Matthew. :D
God Bless!!!
Hugs, JJ
you and she were One!
just excellent!
peace,

Finally I'm able to visit your blog again - thanks to finally good connections - and sorry for the long absence! Traveling and driving sometimes almost 8 hours a day is very tiring and often I just don't feel like sitting on my laptop at all. I know it's sounds like an excuse, but it is not! :))

John, I ask myself the same question, but I find that because I enjoy whatever I do, I always get so much energy to accomplish whatever I have to do, and if I don't finish there is always another day. John it is always a pleasure to have you here. Appreciated. Anna :)
Susanne it is such a nice surprise, I will be visiting you shortly to find out where you are now.
Anna :)
It was 24 c here today...so spring is here...another good sign is the robin that is building a nest right beside our glass sliding patio door on a wall mounted plant pot...Chocolate Girl is making sure the bird knows what they are getting themselves into by sitting out in the sun reading and gardening...
Yesterday I saw 27 bald eagles and over 20 hawks plus 1 barn owl...all this just driving down the road in Metro Vancouver....
Thanks again for your lovely posts, I'll have to return!
Anna :)
Oh it was my Birthday.. may 13 I wanted to go fishing..
