Beautiful and Colorful Rainbow Lorikeets

Today I thought I would get away from talking about winter. But let me get a few words out anyway. Since the last couple of days, it's been freezing here where we live—-30 C with a windshield. It's cold! When going out, clothes make a big difference. However, I have to mention JJ from Nature Shows and Dreams; she has been such a trooper exploring winter wonderland this year that it gave some of us an opportunity, me included, to stay warm at home and enjoy viewing winter from my computer window.

Let's now talk about these beautiful and very colourful exotic birds called Rainbow Lorikeets. This photo was taken during our trip to Singapore [at Jurong Bird Park] in September 2005, using my compact Kodak 3-megapixel camera.
However, I have been photographing a lot of nature and family over the years, but this year, since getting a 100-400mm lens, I have been heavily concentrated on birding.

I think I have seen, photographed, and documented into a small log sheet about 200 birds, but I have a long way to go to hit 10,000 of them—this may be a lifetime. Well, the good thing is that I did not go after insects; there are 3–4 million of them, and I think I have enough different spiders around to keep me busy. BTW, life is busy, busy, busy on my side, so I apologize for my low attendance. Hopefully, I can resume my regular blogging activities soon.

Can you believe I actually started spring cleaning as well?

Hi everyone! I could not think of a better place for this acknowledgement than at the top of the comments on one of Anna's beautiful photo posts so that all of her good friends will be sure to see how much she is appreciated over at my site! . As all you regular readers of My Only Photo and Story Blob know, Anna is one special blogging buddy. On February 4th Anna became the first person to comment 100 times on my blog. Not only has she commented 100 times, every one of them is a content filled pleasure to read.

I might be tempted to say congratulations, but really what I feel is, genuine gratitude. So instead I say thank you Anna, warmly and from my heart. Thank you not just for your comments, but for your blogging friendship. I wish all the best for you, your writing, and your photography. I can't wait to read your next 100!

Anna,
These must be the birds you mentioned to me a while back! Wow, they are so colorful, they don't even look real. These are some beautiful birdies and what a great photo.

A welcome photo.

Hey Will, and now I don't know how to thank you. Not sure how I managed to achieve 100 posts on your blog, it will be nice that in blogger we had that option, lol, this is really good feature you have implemented into your blog. However, if it wasn't of your informative posts and hospitality, never know how far I could have done, so thank you too, and looking forward to another 100 posts. Anna :)

Hi JB, yes these are the ones, glad you love the colors, and I tell you when you see them for real, they are even more colorful. JB thanks again for your comment, and constant visits. Anna :)

Hey Chris, thanks. Yes it is quite gloomy outside these days. Glad you enjoyed it. Anna :)

Lol, it is a good thing you didn't take up taking photos of insects, they are really hard to get good eye shots of.

Thanks for the beautiful and colorful photo, mostly gray and cold here, -30c, mind you we did get a break in the weather, did get up to -11c today, supposed to be 1c by the weekend. the 14 day forecast shows snow for the eclipse, hope it don't happen.

Congrats on your 100th. comment on Wills blog!

And indeed this is another post with a beautiful photo. Those birds are really something. I wonder why birds in the tropics tend to be so much more colorful that ours in North America?

I would love to have anything even half this colorful at our house. I mean I love our little finches and chickadees, but really, wouldn't it be nice to see some real color at the feeder? I know some in N.A. have the Cardinal. That must be nice. They don't live in Southern Oregon, though.
MedaM said…
Those really are colorful and beautiful birds which I have never seen in private. The photo is great.
As for the temperature I have experienced -20°C but never -30°C. Brrrr it really is too cold.
I agree with Will, Anna is on blogging buddie you can count on... if she is this caring she can't see what about those around her? I wonder!

as for the post, it is so hot here we are sweating terribly lol

God bless you

It's nice to see pictures of warmer climates while in the middle of winter. It has actually been pretty nice here (Oregon) for a couple of days. I was beginning to go stir crazy with the non-stop rain we were having, but nothing compared to your negative wind chill factors. I'm not sure I could handle that. Cheers, and cool photo!

Hi Anna,
JB here! Thanks for reading all my posts again. I sure make you read a lot, don't I? Sorry about that, but I have a lot of thoughts and a lot to say and write about! hee hee
What did you mean about peeking into my small world and joining the kitty party? Do you have kitties at your house? I can't wait to hear what you mean!
--JB
P.S. I think our spider was maybe 2 and a half to 3 inches long. It was really pretty. We read on the internet that they have a really short life span, so Charlotte probably died after living in our backyard.
Anna,
My mom and I have a little award for you over at JB's Mom's Big World. Thanks for your continued visits and the great stories and photos on your blog. Keep them coming!

Anna this is just bizarre! I just saw images taken from the exact same bird park on another blogger friends blog!!!!!

http://xtremextina.blogspot.com/2008/02/bird-watching.html

Very pretty birds, I love the placement of their heads.

Taking photos can be very rewarding, and it is very important to share those photos with friends :)

What a wonderful splash of color! I am so impressed by your bird count. Wow! Very impressive!!!

Oh, if you're really disliking winter right now, pop on over to Rosehaven Cottage because we are having an early spring around here.

Hi Anna - you get the award for the Most Anxious for Spring to Arrive! Spring cleaning already - with no fresh air coming in the windows or birds calling you out to photograph them. Ah - I get it now - yours will be done and you will be out there with them while we are still inside cleaning our houses! Your birds are beautiful with such bright colors, but my all time favorite bird picture of yours is the morning dove covered in snow on your grill. It's the best with a great story!

Take care and stay warm!

Hi Anna!

These are beautiful birds and yes, very exotic looking. They remind me that there's a whole world out there, beyond this gray, damp, and foggy section of the Northeast, that has just enough winter to awaken our discontent!

I know it's a lot colder up where you live, and you have my sympathy. Your photography will keep us warm!

Wow, that is a great shot. And I noticed that the focus is clear from closeup to beyond the birds. The color is magnificent, and the whole composition is just striking. You're very good.

Thanks Bob. Yes I was once watching this special on TV and they mention there is so many millions of bugs, I hair stood up. Also, some of them are not even discovered yet, the rain forest it a perfect example. Looks like the lunar eclipse may start early this time. I hate to tell you I will not have that luxury to travel outside my town, lol, but I will watch for it. Hope you are enjoying some warmer weather. Thanks for the congrats, my next goal is 1000 posts. You know it will be nice to have one of those widgets on blogger. Thanks again Bob. Anna :)
myonlyphoto said…
Hey Will thanks again. The colors may have to do something with warm and lots of sun. They say that it is not only color pigment, some of it is also feather molecular structure that refracts the light, depending which angle you are looking at. However, I still enjoy our bold grey birds, as they have personality too. Well, we got Cardinals here, and Oriole's (yellow) and Blue Buntings. I guess only single color birds, and you have to know where to find them in our area, they seem to hang out in specific areas. Thanks Will for visiting and commenting again. Anna :)
myonlyphoto said…
Medam in fact they are. Where we were they also ate from peoples hands, very social. I guess if you have local zoo, sometimes they have them there, I know we have some here. Even -20°C is cold, anything below that is no treat to anybody, they even said that the crime rate is low during those cold days, lol, I guess who wants to be outside. Thanks for visiting Medam, it is always nice to see you. Anna :)

Hi Dick, yes - 30 C wasn't that pleasant. However back in 1995 we were hit with -50, not sure if the wind was moving either during those temperatures. Thanks for your comments again, Anna :)

Hi JD thank you so much for your comments. Yes after experiencing cold and snowy weather, I thought I post some thing warm to warm up too, lol. Yes spring cleaning in deed, just trying to get rid of things that clutter my place, I really like the air circulation going in my house. I am trying to be material free, I really don't care much to have much anymore, just things that I really use. Thanks JD again. Anna :)

Thanks Susanne, spring cleaning will be going on for the rest of month of February, so I am ready for spring. Clutter really bothers me. Hey you can have those as pets, they may be expensive, but very social birds as long you pay attention to them all the time. Thanks for commenting, Anna :)

Hi Julie, if I am not mistaken almost all the rainbow colors. Thank you for your kind comments again, and your visit, I will see you over your blog later. Anna :)

Hi JB again, and thank you. Don't worry, I love reading your posts, they always have interesting facts, and something's I did not know. Good job, and please don't stop. Oh about peeking, I meant that I have not visited the JB's small world blog, and I was curious what was going on there, and I saw lot of kitty photos, etc, so occasionally you may see me there, as well on your mom's blog too. Thanks for all the info on your spider, that was quite a size, I would be really paranoid if it was getting closer to the house. Too bad that their life span is so short, after all this fly catching and eating I guess. BTW thanks for the award, it is really appreciated, I will be over later to pick it up. Thanks again it is really nice of you. Anna :)

Hi LS, I have visited your blogger friends blog, looks like yes probably the same park, just could not find those birds, lol, but hey nice set of photos of flamingos and pelicans. Kriz Cpec, thanks for the suggestion, lol, and I would love too, but I think it will be a while. Hi Cindy, thanks for all your kind comments. Yes winter was nice at the beginning, but now that we get cold and snow over and over again, it is getting really too much, and then on the other hand I am seeing these blooming flowers on other blogs, including yours and getting signs of spring, I am really craving spring. You got some beautiful collection of spring flowers, and I will definitely pop again. Thanks, Anna :)
myonlyphoto said…
Hi Kathy, thanks for the award, lol, I will take it and I am really looking forward the spring, btw that put smile on my face. Yes spring cleaning, just getting rid of stuff around the house first so when I open the windows the fresh air will hit every corner of the house, and you are right, I do my cleaning now so I can enjoy the spring - very good point. Thanks for your comments on the birds, and you know the morning dove is my favorite too, I was lucky then to get it like that, some of the unexpected photos are the best. Thanks again, Anna :)
myonlyphoto said…
Hi Peter, thanks for your comment, and lol about your children. Love the link and the site you gave me, I bookmarked. BTW the bird on top of the banner brownish kind with a long beak, I saw in the our zoo twice, and I just love that bird, may be I will post it too. Just look so cool, do you have those around your place? Thanks again Peter, Anna :)
myonlyphoto said…

Yes it is colder here, but then I just stay home, lol. Thanks again Lynda, Anna :)

Hi Anna,
What a better way to forget winter than by looking at these lovely photos of tropical birds? Lovely photo, and I laughed when I read that it's a good thing you didn't go after insects. Haha. I am reminded of a character in Douglas Adams novel who turned immortal after a bizarre accident. He became thoroughly bored and cynical after thousands of years, and then decided to spend his days insulting every living creature in the known universe...in alphabetical order. it seems that photographing every insect might be a similar venture due to the multitudes of them out there. Funny. Thanks for the photo.
