Chickadee Little The Kung Fu Master

I could not believe what I saw through my lens the other day. However, before I go on, have you ever watched martial arts movies where martial arts students had to practice catching a fly with chopsticks? I have done it many times; it looks easy, but it is not. I never caught anything as well. Speaking for myself only, because some of you out there might have this talent naturally. I am a big fan of Bruce Lee. It's not a secret that I studied martial arts in the past: Shaolin Kung Fu, Wing Chun, and Tai Chi. The worst part is that I have not done it for a few years now, and I stink big time. Oh well, maybe one day I will be able to chop something like a brick, but for now I will stick with chopping vegetables.

Okay, let me tell you what I saw. I was photographing this juvenile black-capped chickadee who was singing away on the tree. Then suddenly I saw him with the fly in his beak. Just like that. I don't know how he did it, but he did it, and he is little too, so I named him Chickadee Little, The Kung Fu Master. Check out the second image. By the time I took that photo, the fly was on its way into his throat. And this also tells you whether I would catch the fly with chopsticks or not. As a matter of fact, I have trouble grabbing rice with them too. I am just slow, and that may be because I enjoyed the moment. Oh well, this little bird was nice to watch.

These little walks we have these days are always full of fun, and Matthew makes it all happen. I know that all of you are busy or enjoying summer, so reading another post may take up some time. However, if you want to just see Matthew's latest pictures, you can check them out on my Story Blob blog.

UPDATE [2023]: Story Blob blog content is now merged with My Only Photo blog content.

Witam Anno!
Ładne makro, ptaszki wyglądają jak polskie wróbelki. Chociaż i tych ptaków w Polsce coraz mniej. Pozdrawiam z Warmii:)

Amazing capture Anna, talk about perfect timing and excellent fast shutter too. Just love the details and clarity in your bird images, truly great work. Take care Anna, always enjoy your narratives. Maybe Matthew will follow in his mother's footsteps and take up karate. My son studied it for 12 years, good discipline and structure.

This bird looks absolutely adorable and cute. You have got the second snap in the nick of time, before it had swallowed its prey. Beautiful snaps as usual.
Anna,

I am fascinated about bird photograph because of your bird photos in your blog. However, it's very costly to buy a high telephoto lens here in Thailand. Thanks for sharing your nice story and stunning bird photos.

Cheers,

Zbyszek dziękujemy za miły komentarz. A co się dzieje z ptakami w Polsce? Mam zamiar odwiedzić jeden dzień Poland, ale myślę, że głównym celem będa być bociany. Best wishes. Anna:)

Awesome captures and timing dear Anna, even though you said that you're not quick enough with martial arts - you definitely are in shooting ;)

Thanks John for your kind comment. Since I started to use higher iso I been very lucky to capture better pictures of birds, especially when they are between the trees and the light does not reaches. I know what you mean about martial arts, I don't regret that I forgot lot of moves, but I did learn much about discipline, respect and patience. Thanks for dropping by my friend. Anna :)

Thanks Rajesh, yes it was nick of time. Thanks for your kind comment again, Anna :)

speaking of kung fu, or Qi gong, I always find it hard to believe when I saw someone who would swallow burning charcoal or pour boiling oil onto himself. Quite scarry to me. But this bird is awesome. thanks for sharing

Oh Anna!! How lucky you were to see that moment. I love your story. Chickadee Little really is a Kung Fu Master...wax on, wax off! I also like your new About Me photo. You and little Matthew look adorable. He is so intent...obviously having fun just holding your hand! :-) (My Matty is now 14, but he still likes to hold my hand every now and then!)

I liked your post and think I have seen them catch flies as well. I like to see the sparrows hog down the pesky Japanese Beetles.

Thanks for your visit to my Pick a Peck of Pixels blog. It is really appreciated as I am trying to get a lot of visitors in a short period of time.

Tell you friends. Link up. Be part of history. Abraham Lincoln

Thanks Kelly, wax on, wax off! - that would have been another contender for my title, thanks for the heads up, may be I find another kung fu bird, lol. Your Matty likes to hold hand, that is very nice, especially for that age boy. Children are precious. And yes my Matthew is having hard time letting go my hand all the time, and he is really attached, follows me all the time, as a matter of fact I have to hand the camera to daddy sometimes....Thanks for commenting again Kelly. I have just the beginner basics of Karate and Tai Chi "under my belt" and like you, that training was several years ago. Anyhow, just enough to confirm my admiration for that chick-a-dee AND your quickness in capturing the moment.

Had to pop back and thank you for visiting my Pick a Peck of Pixels blog. I am making history thanks to you and your visits.

It is a cool, 63 degrees here at 6:00 AM in Ohio on this August 1st, 2009. Not bad. I slept under a blanket last night. We set the coldest July ever recorded last month. I hope you get some relief this month.

Anna:

A little bird named Kung Fu master. I love it.

You certainly captured that picture at just the right time. What patience you have.

We have a nest of little birds right outside our upstairs' window. Each year it's a different family and my Queen watches them hatch their young, feed them, teach them to fly and, finally, they all flutter away to their own lives. The next year the cycle starts all over again. My Queen always has her bird books handy and can tell the names of every feathered family that resides in the eves of the roof next door.

By the way, great photography.

Happy trails.

Carol thanks for commenting. Studying martial arts was fun, but you know Carol even though I probably couldn't kill a fly now, lol, it thought me a great deal of discipline, and I think you know what I mean. Anna :)

Abe no problem, but I think you are already part of the history. Your blog is really filling in. Thanks for coming back. Anna :) PS We had one of the coldest days today, however, the house heats up from the sun during the day so at night is still nice and comfortable.

Thanks Swubird, I don't know if it was patience, the whole thing happened probably within 3 minutes, lol, and these days walking with Matthew I have to be fast, lol.

Looks like Queen is enjoying her birdwatching. I learn something, that there are many many birds around us, and you don't really have to go far to enjoy their presence. Tell her to keep up, and may be you should get her a camera too, lol.

Swu, thanks again it is always nice to see you here. Anna :)
