A Bit of Knowledge: Digital Compositions & Editing - Earthshine, Thin Crescent & Full Moon

Every full moon, activity on my blog definitely increases. I found the source of that activity. Vampires, werewolves, Baba Iagas, and witches are reading and cooking stuff here. No, no, none of that nonsense. It's my two posts from 2007 and 2009 that are causing all the trouble—how to take pictures of the moon. Once the full moon shines in the sky, everyone reaches for their cameras and tries to snap photos, but then they realize they need help, and thus the Internet search for tips starts.
As a result, I get a lot of hits because of that. This also proves that 'it has to do with statistics, not lunacy', adding further support to the activity article. It does not prove why I continue to have crazy dreams during a full moon; last time I was a security guard for our Prime Minister [Canada], and it wasn't a happy ending for me. Anyway, the article reads:

"There is a good reason why there may be more crime on the nights of a full moon; it has to do with statistics, not lunacy. People are more active during full moons than on moonless nights. An especially beautiful full moon may draw families out into the night to appreciate it and lovers to local necking spots. Muggers and other criminals who ply their trade at night also use the moon's illumination to carry out their dirty deeds."

Now for the real stuff. I have so many photos of the moon that I am going to have some fun and do some digital editing. I will continue to photograph the moon, just in case there is some activity going on, and I wouldn't want to miss that. My first digital composition is below: a gull and the full blue moon.

Many nights ago, I tried to photograph the crescent moon. My goal was to capture the earthshine, a slight illumination of the moon by the earth. I was successful, but the crescent was just one bright crescent and some earthshine. When I was taking pictures, I would only get one or the other. So I decided to 'cheat' a bit and create a digital composition to showcase both in one shot. However, I will continue to work on the settings to get that nice crisp crescent moon with earthshine, a knowledge topic for another day, and hopefully my equipment is capable of handling it.

Digital Composition: Crescent Moon Earthshine Taken Minutes Apart
To compose this combination, I just cut out the crescent moon and superimposed it on the crescent on the earthshine photo. The crescent on the earthshine is a bit larger because I couldn't keep my camera very still. I did a mistake. Since I was very much multitasking—shooting the moon, making dinner, and trying to entertain Matthew—I improperly mounted my Canon 100-400mm lens on the tripod. Since 100-400mm is a heavy lens, it comes with a tripod mounting ring that mounts the lens to the tripod, and the digital camera is the floating one. I mounted my camera on the tripod, and the lens was the floating one. A piece of advice: don't do it; you can potentially damage the contact between the lens and digital camera.

Digital Composition: Earthshine and an Almost Full Moon from a Month Ago
To compose this combination, I took my nice-textured crescent moon and full moon from last month. aligned the crescent with the full moon, placing the crescent on top. I rotated the moon, changed the moon's opacity, and erased the black background from the crescent moon. I adjusted the intensity on the Erase tool for more blurred edges. I sharpened both images using the Unsharpen mask, and then I applied a sepia Photo Filter to give a sepia effect.

Hi Anna,
Looks like there is lot of photoshop processing involved to get the earthshine AND a crisp edge. I have tried hopelessly to get that and the only times the picture was decent was when the moon was very close to horizon. After 20 degrees or so, I don't even try :)
But I'll take these tips. You were so right in the intro paragraph, I found your blog when I was looking online for tips! So cool!
cheers,
Priyank

Great post and some memorable work with the images, Anna.

In answer to your question (no, there is no such thing as a ``silly question'') all the Verse And Worse segments are indeed written by me.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Anna:

These are really cool pictures of the moon. especially the two crescents hanging side by side against the black background. Well done. We should all strive to stretch our imagination a little more often.

Happy trails.

Hey Anna, great stuff and images, love the Eathshine and the sharp bright Moon image, I think the 4th one down, awesome, and thanks for all your effort in putting this post together, it will help a lot of people out.
I love this blog, Anna. It's one I will come back to again and again. I've become interested in recording my days with photographs since starting my own blog six months ago, but have no technical knowledge at all. The time you have taken to give these tips is extraordinary, and very much appreciated., Thanks so much for your kind comment on my last post. Oh, and just to mention, I also love your story blog. Your big heart shines through every narrative.

Just bookmarked your tutorial Anna, plan on reading it. Your pictures of the moon are unsurpassed, just love them. Years ago, astronomy was a hobby of mine and I spent many hours looking at the moon through my telescope. The clarity and details of your moon images are fascinating. Take care Anna and keep the moon pictures coming.

I am going to have to really study your suggestions, Anna. Since I have been taking digital photos for the past year or so the moon is one of the things I have not mastered. Try as I might, I still can not even approach with digital what I was able to do with film. Not just with the moon, but in all other areas as well.

That is most comprehensive bit of advice about getting a shot of the moon I have seen! The shots you take are fantastic (love the textured one - I am assuming I need a GOOD digital camera to achieve that and a good zoom too). I love how you have made this shot and taken us through step by step, and I the top one with the gull is gorgeous too.

Congrats on POTD from David.Well deserved. Had me gasping at those pictures!

Well, that is interesting and I'm gonna try it.
Waiting for the Moon now.

Awesome read, thanks - I will surely try that.
I'll post a link the moment I'll have it :P
Thanks again! Love your examples.

I too, reached for my digital camera the other night and tried in vain to capture the moon. Nope, just couldn't do it and thought I would look for some information to help me, or perhaps a better camera! These shots are incredible. If I had a hat on I would take it off to you.

Hey Anna, thanks for the comment:) It's a pleasure hearing from you:)...You have a way with photos....Regarding your post about the electronics that misbehave during cold....Well who knows, if the cold will keep it like this too long,I'll bet we'll start misbehaving too...Can you imagine your eye stuck to the camera while preparing to take a shot or your finger stuck on the action button?Lol....You have a great blog my friend, keep up the good work.

Ps: Your boy is a sweetheart!!!

Thanks Kriz, and yes I think it is statistics, otherwise I would have to call myself a lunatic, lol. Thanks again. Anna :)

Thanks Swubird. I think by now you should know that it is my favorite subject on my blog, lol. Thank you again for your nice comments. Anna :)

Thanks Bob, I sure hope so, lol. But I still have to find a way to take a photo of the real earthshine with nice crescent with texture, not just bright light. Oh well give me something to do. So Bob is going to China, wow! Anna :)

Thank you Carol so much. You said you don't have technical knowledge, I didn't either. I think cameras do most of the job these days, we just need artistic eye, and you do have that.

Thank you also for reading my story blob blog, I wish I had little more time to write more often.

Thanks again Carol for your kind words.

Thanks John, your comments are always appreciated. You know may be one day you can do HDR processing of the moon. I tried through some free software but I am not getting results I want to - but I will continue to try, since I have so many moon photos. Thanks again, Anna :)
myonlyphoto said…
Hey Will I find it it is more fun with digital becuase you can see results immediately not until you process them. I had conventional SLR too, and once I was so used to digital, that when I went back, I didn't even noticed that I was shooting without film - I had to ask everyone again to pose, since it was anniversary party, lol. Good luck and have some fun! Anna :)

Thanks Cath, and welcome to my blog. Yes, you do need a bit better camera, but I have shot some photos of the moon with my point and shoot 10x and they actually came out good. Thanks for your nice comment, I just visited your blog, very interesting. Anna :)

Thanks about Matthew, ohhhhh he is!

Thanks Kathy. I guess my photo restoration work paid off, lol, but never again, I think I destroyed my shoulder for clicking too much. BTW we got Matthew new shoes three days ago, I take him for short walks three times a day as long the weather is nice, and everytime he is giving me episodes when we go inside, lol.

Thanks Kathy again,
Anna :)

Thanks Lynda, my last one is my favorite one! Yes trying to do too too many things at the same time. Matthew is paying attention and looking around a lot, so everytime he sees something new lol, he is a bit more calm. You know he gets so excited when I give him my point and shoot camera, I think the way he is going he probably will be shooting photos soon. You know he sees us writing some notes, the other day he actually picked up a pen and tried to do the same. I was shocked...and it hit me, he is really growing fast. Lynda thanks again for your nice comment. Anna :)

Hello Anna :D!

I loved what you did with your first image in this post: very nice indeed.

LOL I didn't know there were more troubles during the fullmoon...wow! But the explanation makes utter sense, doesn't it?

Girl, you are one gifted artist...I knew you took great pics; but these digital compositions are fantastic (I am impressed, I confess) :D!

Congratulations for such a great article :D!

Hi! Just letting you know that I got my hands on a Nikon D200 with a battery pack and two great Nikon lenses. Mind you, I am drooling with envy, as they're for my eldest son when he turns thirty in July. He lives in the top end of Australia, so hopefully he will be able to send me some great moon shots like yours when he learns how to drive the thing, as the air is much cleaner and the light pollution far less than down here.

Take Care,
Peter

Anna, your bird with the moon in the background is one of the most brilliant photos I have ever seen.

You have the savvy to capture such excellent photos. When I come to your blog I just get refreshed. What a joy to see your creativity and take it in.

Thanks Max my friend. I knew I will impress you one day, lol, I tried hard. You know I did photo restoration for a while, so now it is paying off, lol. It was hard work, and I don't do it anymore, as people wanted too much of editing [add/remove a person, then wrinkles lol], all I wanted is to restore images... Max my friend thank you so much for your kind comment. Anna :)

Hey Peter it is too bad that it is not yours. Nice piece of equipment though. What lens sizes did you get? I am sure your son will be updating you with all kinds of pictures and not just the moon. But if you get a moon photo, I got to see it or better lets blog about it, lol. Happy Birthday to your son, wow you are such a generous father. Anna :)

Max, no nothing big like that, I only restored photo in my town, it was almost like a charity work for older people. I charged $30/photo and I spend 10 hours working on it. I enjoyed it, but then my shoulder started to give up, and I couldn't click that much anymore. But it was fun! Thanks Max. Anna :)
