A Bit of Knowledge: Winter Photo When Sky Meets the Ground

The only down side of the winter photography is the cold, cold and cold. If you have SLR camera, you will notice that in the extreme cold weather your camera may sometimes stop responding, One issue can be that electronics usually misbehave in the cold weather. I know that because it happens to my car all the time. Every time there is drastic temperature change - I get errors for scary warnings like engine failure. Secondly, in the cold weather usually metal parts shrink, and expand in heat, thus the lost connection between the two parts such a lens and camera. Therefore, no need to panic sometimes, because it is a very common camera response to temperature changes. Mind you, sometimes I malfunction too in extreme cold temperatures or hot temperatures.

Now about being creative. Winter photography can be very rewarding. However, sometimes you have to be in the moment. I had that moment about 3 years ago when I snapped few pictures of the evergreen trees in the field covered with the snow. It was cloudy day, and the sky was quite white. After reviewing photos I found that when sky met the ground, the trees looked like they were floating in the air. Yes, I almost got the floating trees. Another way to get the same effect is to position your camera towards the trees and low enough to capture the snow covered field as background, and again you can get the same and even better result of trees floating in the air. This isn't my best picture, because it was a pure accident, but in the future I will pay more attention. Simplicity of this setting can be very rewarding.

My Baby Is Ready for Real Happy Valentines Chocolate and Dinner - Meat and Potatoes

Matthew is now over 9 months, and boy he is ready for a real food. He is getting fussy with his mashed food, so sometimes I have to hide his tiny little bowl inside my big bowl. In his mind I think he knows I am tricking him, lol. So what is he up to? Walking, running - of course with our help. Talking in his language, and always trying to be part of the conversation. Reading all my computer books, but never forgets to read his Peek-A-Baby book. He is such a little character. Last week one day we played and he had so much fun, and he giggled so much, that when I was nursing him [yes this is still his primary food], he remembered and continued to giggle during the feeding - I was afraid that he will bite me, lol. I had to resume feeding at later time, as we both sat in the glider and laughed. Yes also watches TV, but not cartoons - his favorite, Gray Power Auto Insurance, ING bank, CIBC bank, Canada Pension Plan, and now I think he has an eye on some standing up bath tub commercial. Oh and the weather man too. I think I finally figured out why - they are all talking to him.

Valentine's Day is around the corner. Sorry to say, but I will not be supporting the economy this year. Staying home and cooking up a dinner. But then I have done the same in the past 10 years. Just too darn expensive for prepared food, plus taxes, and tip on top of that. Not to mention flowers, as I always ask for a bunch day after the Valentines - well this never goes well with my husband, lol. That way I can have them one day longer, or put that money away and buy me some nice digital toy.

A Bit of Knowledge: How To Take Photos of the Moon - Handy Tip For SLR Digital Cameras

Almost couple of years ago, I wrote post on how to take photographs of the moon: Moon Photography: How To Take Photos of the Moon - Handy Tip. Since then I have learned to take still good moon photos with less camera settings on my Canon EOS 20D SLR. You can still follow my previous instructions, but you may also learn as me that you do not need to do all that. Note these instructions are if you want to take close up photo of the moon. Also note that these instructions are based on my Canon EOS 20D SLR and Canon EF100-400mm F4.5-5.6L IS USM Lens.

EQUIPMENT
Camera: SLR Type [Canon, Nikon, Other]
Lens: Min 75-300mm or 100-400mm
Other: Tripod or Other Stable Support

CAMERA SETTINGS
1] I usually take all my moon photos in the P mode or so called Programmed Auto mode. Or you can use Tv mode as per previous post. However, overtime I found that there was not much difference, as I usually rushed to the full moon scene and I forgot to change from P to Tv. In the P mode the camera chooses right Tv and Av settings for your scenario.

2] The most important setting to change on your camera is the Metering Mode - change to Partial Metering, a symbol that looks like an outline of the circle. Interesting note is that I noticed that on the point-and-shoot cameras the metering mode is different, it is called Spot Metering and it shows as a filled small circle. See image beside.

3] Now go out and find your object, that is the Moon. Ensure to place your camera on the stable surface pointing at the moon. I learn that it does not have to be a tripod. You can position your camera on the table or top of the car, and even better if you have stable hands, just rest your elbows. You may find it it works. I find that it just takes too much time setting the tripod out.

4] Next once you positioned your camera, of course you want to take the close up photo, therefore, you need to extend your lens to the maximum, 300mm or 400mm.

5] Ensure that your ISO is set on ISO200. If you select higher your moon photo may show grainy texture.

6] Ensure that your AF point - focal point is at the centre of the view finder.

7] Depending on the day, some days moon is really bright and sometimes is less bright, but remember still bright. Therefore, shoot test photo and see how bright the moon is. If it is really bright and you do not see any moon contours, you will need to adjust your Exposure Compensation. For brighter image scroll to the left, and darker image scroll to the right.

You may want to try this:

When it is really cold and you have the moon visible from your window, then take the photograph from the window. If window is dirty, set your camera lens to manual and focus manually. Your lens will be focusing on the moon so all the dirty stuff on the window practically will be invisible. Don't be surprised, but the above photo was taken from my office window.
