Juvenile Cedar Waxwing - The Spring Result

Back in 2007, I had this great opportunity to capture over 50 photos of the juvenile Cedar Waxwing [Bombycilla cedrorum]. The amazing thing about all juvenile or baby birds is that they don't know the definition of danger at this early stage of life. They are very vulnerable; thus, the function of the parent is to protect them.

Out of many, here are the photos; note on one of them the yellow marking on the tail. The nice thing was that I was able to get very close; we are talking 2 feet away. I guess he or she must have been really new to the world and enjoyed my photo shoot. This is my second great photo of the juvenile bird, as some of you who have been blogging with me for a while know my famous juvenile Barn Swallow [Hirundo rustica], the one I've been hiding my face behind. Then I had to shed some feathers and show you the real me. The moment was the same: I was able to get very close with my camera, but not too close because parents were around.
The interesting part is that I recall those moments when Matthew was a tiny baby and would go from person to person and just be there, look around, smile at everyone, and observe. Sometimes I wondered if he knew who his mother was. And now, at 10 months and 1/2, he knows. Matthew recognizes familiar faces; occasionally, after getting to know someone, he will eventually go to them, but not for long. In the last couple of weeks, Matthew has learned how to be affectionate. Unfortunately, he started by hugging a stuffed bear first, but he is now hugging us too—of course, when he wants to. We got him his first shoes this week, so guess what? He is ready to go outside, and yet he does not forget the jacket. I wonder sometimes how much he knows; it seems like everything we do, he wants to do: walk, talk, eat, write, answer the phone, and cook.

Spring is finally here, and all the birds in our neighbourhood are singing away—yes, mating season. Those red-winged blackbirds just don't give up. Geese are flying from place to place. Crows from one end to the other, and the seagulls are the same. This is not a very exotic bird crowd, but hey, it's a sign of spring, and soon we will be out for adventures too.

G'Day! Cute little fellows! The black band across their face, which probably prevents light being reflected back into their eyes, is used to good effect by us humans too! Such as football players and the like. A bit of trivia for you!

Yes, birds, animals and all creatures great and small have a lot in common with us humans! Afraid of no one in the beginning, we soon learn that mum and dad are the most trusted.

As young parents we couldn't wait to hear them talk. It's only when they forget to stop talking that we perhaps wished they were babies again!

As for taking their first steps, that is the beginning of seeking their independence and before you know it they've left home; but always welcomed home when they want to!

Take Care,
Peter

What beautiful close-ups, Anna! I enjoyed them so much.

Matthew had better NOT be cooking yet! Else I'd say you have a prodigy on your hands, lol...

Our daughter was the same way. Even until she was two or so, she would go into anyone's arms. We had to actually TEACH her to be more defensive. In the supermarket, she would sit in the cart and hijack every person who went past. "Hello, Man!" she would say. Or "Nice to see you, Lady!" It was adorable.

How I long for those innocent days. I hope you enjoy every day with Matthew, because it goes so fast!

Anna:

These are absolutely beautiful pictures of birds. You should really be published.

My Queen is an avid bird watcher. She doesn't photograph them, but every year a group of birds make their nest under the eves of the house next door. Their roof is close to our upstairs bathroom window, so the birds are only a few feet from us. Every year, the Queen tracks the progress of a new family from the time they're hatched until they learn to fly. She loves them all, and watching them grow from hatchlings to full grown birds is a wonderful saga.

Happy trails.

My goodness, Anna, you have quite the collection of appreciative readers. And, now, I have the good fortune to be one of them. I am so happy to have been introduced to your blog. The pictures, as I said somewhere else, take my breath away, but also your stories and observations about Matthew and about life are heart warming. Your gentle, but very keen eye gives me a glimpse into your world, and helps me to pick up more of the details in my BC one. And exotic, in the long run, is not important. It's your ability to point out the beauty in our every day surroundings that thrills me. That barn swallow, with its little mouth open, reaches right to the core of innocence. Thank you so much for sharing your life with us.

Hi Anna!

Simply fabulous!

All three photos put as smile on my face…interestingly I think my favorite is the third photo…not just because it has an intriguing profile with pretty head feathers standing up and downy chest with a pretty colored tail but because of the excellent imagery of its claws on the leaves.

If Matthew is starting to mimic everything you guys are doing you better not let him see you drive! Of course this also means he will be a blogger! LOL If he learned to cook by watching you what would he make?

Bring on Spring! I am waiting baby! LOL Cold…windy…and rainy here today but the flowers in a surge of courage are poking their heads up…crazy things…you know I love the “common” birds…Canada geese, seagulls, crows are all wonderful…Currently we have massive amounts (read thousands) of bald eagles and swans (read hundreds) in our area…

Let Matthew drive? He is already driving lol, by walking where he wants. And cooking, I don't know but he is everywhere in the kitchen, and hope it will be a good food.

It is nice to have birds. You got bald eagles - oh send some over. And crows, when I was in Banff, these crows are huge. We have them here, but they are lean ones, lol. The spring is here, but its cold, and windy and sometimes rainy. Oh well it will be here eventually.

LS thanks for the refreshing comment. Anna :)

Hi Anna,

Your cedar waxwing shots here are fabulous. The light is perfect and the baby seems to enjoy the loving attention that you are giving it. I got some juvenile waxwing photos a couple of years ago, but it was after they had fledged. They were busy eating hawthorn berries. Your photography and personal touches are wonderful.

Oh Anna,

Such a cute bird! :)....I loved it!

Yes, Matthew is going through a phase that all older (or only) children go through: they emulate their parents, since early age. I was like Matthew - I knew stuff that my mother would ask herself "where on earth did she learn this?"...but we learn from our parents (you see, we spend a lot of time observing you guys lol).
Second children don't seem to emulate parents that much, because they are busy adoring their brothers and wanting their attention all the time LOL...

Fantastic photos, and fantastic text, darling! :D

Cheers

wow, this is very cool.. we were at kingman state fishing lake in kansas doing some fishing, the whole lake is shallow, like 6 ft, max depth, we were all over the they call it a lake I would have called it a pond.. Anyway it was the day after a coolfron and major storm we wanted to try our luck.. we were in the lake on our boat and about 1pm afternoon, I spot something splashing in the middle of lake, lake full of mossy typegrass as we got closer we saw it was a bird, seemed to be a baby.. it was trying to stay up, but could see it was in distress.. we decided to get over by it ans see what we could do.. we trolled over there and I leaned over the boat edge and tried to get it to get on the end of the paddle to help it up.. it wasnt flying.. I did get it scooped up, and put it on the carpet in the front deck of boat.. it was shaking, the water was cold to us so im sure it was cold and its wing saturated.. it had fluff so i knew it couldnt be to old.. I didnt think it could fly so i told hubby let it sit and warm up, dry-off and when we get to shore we will try to put it in a dry place, maybe moma will come after it.. got to tell you the cutest bired, it was in the sun and soon the shaking stopped the little bird would look at and stare at hubby it didnt try to run or jump it just sit and would clean its wings, look around, and even nibbed at some of this water plant from the water.. it was getting better.. we continued fishing checking it out everynow and then, then all of a sudden it just took off and flew about 100 yards to a row of trees.. Pretty cool.. had a good feeling we gave it a second chance, no way it would have made it out, it was a brown/tanish, and had a like pointed um crest I guess you call it on back of head(pointed feathers downward), a Black eye mask, had darker feathers with tail showing a little yellow on the end.. it was the cutest thing.. hubby took a few pics with the cell camera.. it was the highlight of the day,, we didnt catch a thing.. but the little bird made it very cool time on the water.. also did see a few water moccasins moving arround and across the water so I am pretty sure it wouldnt have lasted long..got home searched it and found it to be a waxwing..

Oh it was my Birthday.. may 13 I wanted to go fishing..
